OPERATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH

Purpose

Service members returning from deployment may be at increased risk for some mental health outcomes including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), alcohol/substance abuse, and suicide attempt/ideation. The Deployment Health Division within the EpiData Center Department, using deployment personnel records, has developed methodologies to monitor these outcomes within medical encounter records, prescription drug transactions, and deployment health assessments before and after deployments.

Reports

  • Marine Corps Force Health Surveillance Report (.pdf)
This monthly report provides detailed information on the monthly prevalence of total behavioral health encounters, PTSD, MDD, alcohol/substance abuse, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and suicide ideation. Prevalence of selected psychotropic drug use and positive screens for PTSD and TBI on the Post-Deployment Health Assessment are also monitored.
  • Quarterly Active Duty PTSD Report (.pdf)
The Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) requested the EpiData Center Department at the Navy and Marine Corp Public Health Center (NMCPHC) to describe the incidence of PTSD among Department of Navy (DON) active duty (AD) service members, including recruits.
