ANXIETY CHECKLIST

SPECIFIC SITUATIONS

BEHAVIOR/SIGNS

TAILORED SUPPORT

A Sailor appears anxious or nervous
Continuous worry
Difficulty focusing and concentrating
Fatigue and/or tiredness
Difficulty sleeping
Lapses injob performance
Irritable
Poor concentration
Restlessness
Muscle tension
Be familiar with the warning signs
Ask Sailor directly about their problems
Inquire about specific stressors
If problems are significant, encourage referral to mental health
Consider referral to FFSC stress management classes/program/counseling
Ensure the Sailor is safe at the work place if he/she works in a potentially dangerous environment and focus/concentration is a concern
Assure the Sailor that effective treatments for anxiety are available
Explain that treatment for anxiety does not usually interfere with one’s career--but could save it!
Listen to coworkers who may express concerns about the unit member’s emotional state
Be vigilant for unhealthy coping responses such as alcohol or drug abuse
Work is significantly    affected and/or    safety is a concern
 

 

The Sailor appears preoccupied and worried over a recent stressful life event
The Sailor ’s work performance is impacted by the presence of anxiety
There may be concern over safety issues if concentration, focus, or sleep is impaired
Refer to the appropriate helping agency
Consider referral to Mental Health
If significant impairment is obvious, and the person refuses help, speak with Mental Health in regards to a possible Commander Directed Evaluation
Discuss your concerns over work performance and/or safety issues with the person
Inquire if the person has been having any difficulty with driving
Encourage self-referral to the Mental Health
