Shipshape Program Facilitators

Facilitating the Shipshape Program

The NMCPHC Health Promotion and Wellness (HPW) Department provides Shipshape Facilitator Training to prepare a facilitator to manage the standardized eight session program, (two online sessions and six in-person group sessions led by the facilitator). The program provides information, motivation, guidance, and support for service members, beneficiaries, and government civilians ready to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Facilitators adhere to program methodology and curriculum provided by NMCPHC. Either the facilitator or a locally designated point of contact (POC) is responsible for coordinating the administrative aspects of a local Shipshape Program, including collecting roster and reporting forms and submitting to NMCPHC in alignment with the reporting guidance.

Shipshape Program Facilitators are also responsible for marketing their local program to commands, supervisors, and the community to socialize the availability and requirements of the program. At least two Shipshape Programs are required to be held annually; however, four programs per year is recommended. Additional programs can be provided, based on the need in the served population.

Coordinating the Shipshape Program

While the NMCPHC manages the overall Shipshape Program, there are local POCs at medical treatment facilities (MTFs), shipboard commands, and other ashore facilities to administer the program. Depending on the location and size the Shipshape Program, the local POC may be a facilitator or the command may choose to designate another POC to coordinate administrative, logistical, and reporting aspects of the program. Designating another POC (may be referred to as a coordinator) is beneficial for larger locations who may have multiple facilitators instructing multiple Shipshape Programs every year.

The designated POC serves as the primary point of contact for the NMCPHC Shipshape Program Manager and a central contact for all facilitators at his or her establishment. This person is responsible for submitting data and reporting rosters to NMCPHC (refer to Resources section below). They are also required to complete Shipshape Facilitator Training and may also serve as Shipshape Program Facilitators.
