Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program
The Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) of the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth provides screening, preventive and rehabilitative services for substance abuse/dependence. We offer IMPACT (level .5); Level I treatment; Level II Intensive Outpatient; Level III Residential treatment and Continuing Care. All of our programs meet criteria specified by local agencies such as the Virginia Safety Action Program (VASAP) and local courts.

Treatment Philosophy
Alcohol addiction and problem drinking are considered to be multi-determined, and our treatment model and placement criteria are based on a bio-psycho-social model. A basic principle of our program is active patient participation throughout his/her counseling and individualized treatment. The goal of treatment is to interrupt the existing cycle, then motivate and support a change in attitudes or behavior. Changes in lifestyle occur only when behavior previously identified as "positive" or "normal" is now seen as problematic or painful. This type of change is facilitated by the acquisition of new academic knowledge, new attitudes, and most importantly new coping skills. Treatment is focused on motivating these changes by exposing the patient to a variety of new topics and experiences. This is intended to assist patients in evaluating their relationship with alcohol, learning how to change that relationship, developing alternatives, and finally, practicing new attitudes and behaviors both in the treatment setting and outside of it. All of this is intended to guide the patients to a healthier pattern of alcohol use or to a lifestyle of abstinence.
