LEADERSHIP
Officer in Charge:
Rachel M. Lewis
CAPT, Nurse Corps, U.S. Navy
Naval Branch Health Clinic Port Hueneme
Captain Lewis is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina.  In 1996, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  Later that year she was selected for a direct commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.
Upon completion of Officer Indoctrination School in 1996, Captain Lewis reported to Naval Hospital Pensacola, Florida, for her first tour as a staff nurse in the Newborn Nursery.  Her next assignment took her to Virginia in 1999 and presented her first significant leadership challenge as she assumed the role of Charge Nurse for Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s Labor and Delivery department, directing all nightshift patient care activity for the Department of Defense’s (DoD) busiest labor and delivery unit.  In 2002, she reported to Naval Hospital Cherry Point, North Carolina, where she had the opportunity to step out of her area of expertise becoming Head, Emergency Medical Services and Command Emergency Manager.  Her next tour, and first overseas assignment, took her to U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella, Italy, in 2005.  While there, she served as Clinic Manager of the Family Medicine and Pediatrics Clinics, Regional Coordinator for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and Director for Nursing Continuing Education.  During this tour, she successfully completed all requirements and earned a Master’s of Health Care Administration in 2007.  Her next assignment brought her back to her career’s beginnings at Naval Hospital Pensacola, where she became Head, Women and Children’s Department in 2008.  During her tenure, she led the outstanding patient care team responsible for twice earning the MHS/DoD Patient Safety Award, the first for Naval Hospital Pensacola.  In 2011, Captain Lewis was given the unique opportunity to serve as an embedded mentor to the Chief Nurse of the Afghan National Army’s Western Region in Herat, Afghanistan.  As the last assigned mentor in this role, she completed the longstanding mission resulting in the successful transition of sustainable nursing services to the Afghan National Security Forces.  Upon completion of her thirteen month deployment, she returned to Naval Hospital Pensacola where she served the rest of her tour as Associate Director for Nursing Services.  In 2013, she reported to U.S. Naval Hospital Rota, Spain, and was competitively selected for assignment as Director of Healthcare Business.  During her last year onboard, she served five months as Executive Officer following an unanticipated transition in the Command’s leadership.  In June 2016, she assumed the duty as the Officer in Charge, Naval Branch Health Clinic Port Hueneme.

In addition to her previously mentioned degrees, Captain Lewis earned national certification in Low Risk Neonatal Nursing in 2004.  Her personal awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various service and unit awards.
