Subj:    PROGRAM CLOSURE NOTIFICATION

It is with a heavy heart I announce that the Navy Nurse Corps Anesthesia Program (NNCAP) is in a voluntary closure status with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.  After over 45 years of academic excellence, the last NNCAP class will graduate on 26 February 2010.

Navy Medicine and the Navy Nurse Corps will continue to support the education of Active Duty Navy Nurses in the field of Nurse Anesthesia through the Duty Under Instruction (DUINs) Program at the Uniformed Service University of the Health Sciences (USU), Graduate School of Nursing, Nurse Anesthesia Program.  The change is much more a merger than a closure.  NNCAP’s values and years of experience are being incorporated into the already stellar Nurse Anesthesia Program at USU.  The integration with USU promotes commitment and cooperation of the joint battlefield thus nurturing a professional relationship with our sister services early in a Nurse Anesthetist’s career.

As alumni of the NNCAP, one major concern of the program closure would be Primary Source Verification for credentialing and privileging at new medical treatment facilities or new employers.  Navy Medicine Professional Development Center (NMPDC) in Bethesda, MD will continue to maintain the NNCAP records after closure.  The NMPDC Registrar currently verifies all graduates prior to 1998; they will expand to include all NNCAP graduates.  Contact information for the NMPDC Registrar is commercial telephone 301-295-1689 or fax 301-295-4823.

Thank you for your support of NNCAP over the years. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 301-295-6091.  The NNCAP office will officially close 01 March 2010.
