NHB General Command/Scope of Services Overview

Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) is a community-based acute care and obstetrical hospital, offering expert primary care, emergency care and a broad range of medical and surgical specialties, with 36 inpatient beds (with expansion capacity to 72+).  The hospital is conveniently located between Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bremerton and NBK Bangor.  NHB is parent command for three Naval Branch Health Clinics and the Puget Sound Family Medicine Residency Program.  The three clinics are located at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, NBK Bangor and Naval Station Everett.

Naval Hospital Bremerton has a three-fold primary mission to support our warfighters, past and present, and their families by:  Providing exceptional care anytime, anywhere; shape military medicine through training, research, and graduate medical education; and to prepare our forces for deployment.

Naval Hospital Bremerton and its clinic’s staff consist of over 1,400 dedicated military, civilian, contract and American Red Cross volunteer personnel.

Over the course of last year, Naval Hospital Bremerton had up to 11 percent of the active duty staff deployed supporting combat units in Iraq, Afghanistan, at Expeditionary Medical Facility Kuwait and other locales such as Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, as well as being engaged in humanitarian aid and disaster response missions such as Operation Unified Assistance in Haiti and on USNS Mercy for Pacific Partnership 2010 that visited Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Timor Leste.

Naval Hospital Bremerton staff physicians are board-certified and all take part in continuing education to keep abreast of the latest changes in their fields.  They are trained at some of the leading institutions in the United States including the University of Washington, Harvard Medical School, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.  Many of our nurses hold advanced certifications and degrees, and we have the only certified Nurse Midwifes on the Kitsap Peninsula.  Our health care professionals strive to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and excellence.

Naval Hospital Bremerton offers a variety of programs and services, providing our patients with the most effective and appropriate tools to maintain health and wellness for life.  All services are centrally located at the main hospital with the exception of our health clinics and our drive-through satellite refill pharmacy, which is located nearby in the Jackson Park Navy family housing area.

As partners in the TRICARE West Region, Naval Hospital Bremerton's dedicated staff, along with TriWest Healthcare Alliance, provides compassionate, timely and quality care to over 85,000 eligible beneficiaries that reside in the greater Puget Sound area (with approx. 60,000 on the Kitsap Peninsula alone). To ensure our patients receive optimum diagnosis and treatment, NHB collaborates with local and national Military Treatment Facilities and civilian health care institutions in both a teaching and knowledge sharing capacity.

What's New at NHB

Environmental Stewardship is Everyone's Responsibility!

Responsible disposal of medications protects the environment.  Unused medications when improperly disposed is harmful to the environment.  If flushed down the toilet, biologically active medications can end up in our waterways and in groundwater.  Throw it in the garbage and it will eventually leach out and contaminate the soil.  Unused medications that collect at homes are a source of poisoning for children and young adults.

In Washington State, poisoning is the second highest cause of death among children due to overdose of prescription or over-the-counter medications. Medications that are kept around for no reason is an opportunity for children to get into them.  Medications should be disposed as soon as it is no longer needed.  Ideally, unused medications should be taken to an approved facility that takes back these medications.  If not available then the proper way to dispose them is described in the enclosed poster.

Taking Care of Your Ticker

Did you know that walking for at least a half hour, six days a week can cut mortality rates from heart disease in half?
Walking regularly also lowers the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and some kinds of cancer.

Reduce Your Cancer Risk

Team up with the cancer "heros" and combat the "villains" whenever you can.
HEROES: a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables; a half hour or more of exercise most days’ a health weight; screenings; and early detection. VILLIANS: tobacco use; alcohol abuse: harmful ultraviolet rays; a high fat-diet; and inactivity.

Naval Hospital Bremerton Smoking Policy

There are two authorized smoking areas on the Naval Hospital Bremerton compound.
Designated areas are:
* The smoking shelter on lower Boone Road (on the NE side of the hospital by the water)
* The smoking shelter located at the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) BBQ Pit, Building 9
Smoking is NOT allowed anywhere inside the hospital, at entrances, at bus stops or in parking lots.

Pregnant? Text 4 Baby's Health

Pregnant women and new mothers can now receive free text messages that will help keep them and their babies in good health. The Military Health System is proud to rank among the government partners in this new program, which works like this:
By texting BABY to 511411 on a mobile phone (or BEBE for a version in Spanish), pregnant women will begin receiving three free SMS text messages each week that are timed to their due date or baby's date of birth.
These messages focus on topics critical to maternal and child health, including birth-defect prevention, immunization, nutrition, seasonal flu, mental health, oral health, and safe sleep. Messages will also connect women to prenatal and infant care services and other resources.
Called "Text4Baby", the program is a mobile health partnership that includes private and public organizations including the Department of Health and Human Services, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and founding corporate sponsor John and Johnson. Government and nonprofit health experts ensure that the text messages contain accurate health information.

The hazards may include temporarily changing an evacuation route, securing a sprinkler system, disabling the fire alarm system during maintenance, etc. ILSM may include announcements that give instructions, detour signs showing alternate routes to exits, and increased inspections by safety staff.
