Background

Injuries and illnesses sustained in-theater threaten the health and readiness of individual warfighters and military units, reducing combat-effectiveness. Our Expeditionary Medical Research team studies mechanisms of injury, causes of illness, and casualty care and treatment from point of injury through definitive care, and recovery and rehabilitation, to identify factors and best practices that improve health outcomes and operational readiness for our warfighters.

Capabilities

  • Collect and scrub data from numerous medical, operational, and tactical datasets and integrate into Expeditionary Medical Encounter Database (EMED), a comprehensive repository developed by our scientists
  • Leverage EMED to capture all factors that impact survivability and optimal health outcomes
  • Identify and track in-theater casualty streams from point of injury through definitive and rehabilitative care through analysis of EMED data

Research

  • Investigation of extremity trauma to maximize health and quality of life outcomes conducted in collaboration with the Extremity Trauma and Amputation Research Track (EACE)
  • Study of blast-related outcomes in the auditory system to mitigate injury and improve outcomes by using EMED to develop the Blast Related Auditory Injury Database (BRAID)
  • Wounded Warrior Recovery Project (WWRP), a longitudinal quality of life study of wounded warriors to improve care and health outcomes
