Travelers Tips En route to Naval Hospital Rota, Spain
|
-
Come with at least Fifty U.S. Dollars in hand. You can exchange currency at the exchange site located downstairs in the Madrid Airport. Also, bring a US ATM card so you can obtain Euro money easily and at the best rate at the Cajero (Spanish ATM).
-
Bring an international phone card like those sold at NEX by AT&T so you can call the Naval Hospital Quarterdeck and your Sponsor. (FYI: American cell phones usually do not work in Spain.) You will need a Euro coin to enable the public phones in the Airport terminal. Instructions are tiny but are available in English (you will have to choose from menu). English is usually an option by choosing the British Flag. When using the phone card you must first dial the Spain access number. For the international AT&T Card, the number is 900-99-0011, then dial the 1-800 AT&T phone number on the card, then dial the access code/PIN, and then you dial the number you are calling. For the Quarterdeck, that would be 956-82-3305.
-
You must contact your sponsor prior to your first flight. Your sponsor's has not been identified but I will forward all contact information to them as soon as they are identified. Call the Naval Hospital quarterdeck phone number, 956-82-3305, when you arrive at the Madrid or Barcelona airport awaiting your connection to Jerez de La Frontera airport.
-
On the overseas flight, your flight attendant will give you a sheet of paper for customs. This sheet is very important. It must be completed before your flight lands. Be ready to provide basic information such as name, address, race, passport #, and address where you are going in Spain. (Base Naval, Rota, Spain)

At the Airport Terminal, look for the Information desk which is indicated by a large, cursive i. The attendee here will speak English and can direct you to your gate and answer any questions.
-
A Green shuttle bus takes you from one TERMINAL to another. You cannot walk from TERMINAL ONE to TERMINAL FOUR. Coming from the USA it is variable at which terminal you land depending on your Airline. The gate for your connecting flight to Jerez de la Frontera can also very between TERMINALS and you will get good instruction at the Information Desk “i “ where to go to connect for your final flight to ROTA. At Madrid Airport, Gate numbers are not posted until about one hour prior to the flight time, you must periodically check the departure board to ensure you have the correct Gate number.
-
Travel with a change of clothes, medications, and toiletries as your baggage may not arrive with you. DO NOT WEAR YOUR UNIFORM WHILE TRAVELING. Carry a separate photo copy of your passport and military ID along with a copy of your orders. Also you should have your driver’s license with you; you cannot get a driver’s license in Spain if you do not have one from the US.
-
A Tourist Passport speeds up your travel and enables you to travel outside of Spain. You may get by with your military ID and orders but it is very desirable to have a passport before you arrive in Spain! | USNH Rota, Spain |
