USNH Yokosuka Main Dental Office
The Main Dental Clinic at USNH serves several shore commands and most of the dental specialists are located here. Specialties include endodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery, orofacial pain, orthodontics, and prosthodontics.
The clinic provides a wide range of dental services, albeit with some limitations. Prosthodontics and orthodontics are limited in availability. Prosthodontics is limited by the demand created by active duty personnel. Implant dentistry is limited to active duty only. Orthodontic care provided as a continuation of treatment in CONUS prior to receipt of orders to Yokosuka. Patients who have braces placed after receiving orders to Yokosuka are not eligible for continuation of treatment. New patients are accepted based on the severity of the case and time left on board, generally 18 months or more. It is strongly recommended that patients be in good dental health prior to departing the U.S. for assignment in Japan.
Highest priority for treatment is given to active duty, followed by family members of active duty personnel. Retirees, DOD civilians, and their family members are seen on a space available basis. Federal law makes DOD civilians ineligible for prosthodontics and orthodontics, even if treatment was started prior to receipt of their job assignment. A fee for service, as determined by the DOD, is charged for all dental work and services rendered to DOD civilians. Space availability is extremely limited for DOD civilians and family.

An under utilized benefit that family members of active duty can enroll in is United Concordia, which is the military’s Tricare Dental Insurance Program. Just as in the U.S., there is a network of civilian dentists off base that accept this insurance. The benefits of United Concordia are actually even better in Japan. Enrolling is easy and can be done online, by fax, or by mail. Monthly premiums are deducted from pay for an amount that is less that SGLI.

Off Base Dentistry
The network of dentists here in the Kanto Plain area have their offices inspected annually by a Navy Dental Officer to ensure the quality of dentistry in a modern, safe, and clean environment. Almost every Japanese dentist in this network speaks English. The network includes many general dentists, orthodontists, and pediatric dentists. A list of Dentists is available at the Main Dental Clinic front desk or in the hospital’s Tricare Office. Although Retirees and DOD civilians are not eligible for United Concordia, this network can still be helpful in locating a civilian dentist.
