Under its roof, sick and wounded from all wars the United States has been involved with have received care. Through any period of time, the hospital and its legion of medical personnel have been at the forefront of where the action is. Thus, the motto "First and Finest". (For more history of NMCP click here)
The new Charette Treatment Facility (pictured above) is a one-million square foot, 291-bed, tertiary care, state of the art research and teaching hospital and is the most modern navy medical facility. All clinics are located on the first two floors, with inpatient care areas on the third and fourth floors. The hospital also contains a small exchange and barber shop, post office, several dining facilities, and a comprehensive medical library which currently subscribes to several hundred periodicals. The compound has a large parking garage, new gymnasium, a swimming pool, and jogging tracks.
About the Program
The ACGME-approved OB/GYN Residency program has been in existence for over 50 years. This program draws its residents from medical schools throughout the United States and has graduates in all parts of the World. The goal of the residency program is to educate excellent physicians/surgeons in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology in order to support the fleet and marine corps, in all areas of operation world wide. While most graduates elect to enter the practice of obstetrics and gynecology, many elect to pursue fellowships in gynecologic oncology, maternal fetal medicine, or reproductive endocrinology. Graduates have gone on to serve their country in various locations in the U.S.; both in hospitals and clinics as well as aboard ship and with marine forces deployed around the globe.
Experience is provided in the broad range of obstetrics and gynecology as defined by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The educational program is supervised by the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Program Director. Education is provided by experienced active duty and civilian (government contract) physicians as well as by full-time faculty. The program trains 20 residents each year, five in each of the four levels. In addition to receiving a broad and intense clinical experience, residents are serving on active duty and are expected to carry out a clinical investigation during their four-year residency.
Teaching Resources
Our patient population includes both active duty members, dependent spouses, and dependent family members from the local area as well as patients med-evacuated from around the world. The volume of obstetrical patients admitted to NMCP annually provides the busiest obstetric service in the Department of Defense. On average we do approximately 4200 deliveries per year. Operative experience is provided by our busy Gynecology Oncology, Urogynecology, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, and General Gynecology clinics. Outpatient experience is provided in the continuity clinics as well as the high-risk obstetrics, and general / subspecialty gynecology clinics. All clinical services emphasize state of the art patient care under the supervision of attending staff physicians.

Life In Hampton Roads
The Hampton Roads area consists of the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News. There are over one million people living in Hampton Roads. The weather varies with the seasons, with long, mild springs and falls. The winters are typically short, but snow is seen once or twice each year. The area is renowned for its resort status, and Virginia Beach is one of the top tourist destinations on the East Coast. All the localities have excellent school systems and the cost of living is the lowest of any of the three main Navy teaching hospitals. A wide variety of outdoor activities are available in the area such as hiking, boating, diving, and fishing, and several ski resorts are within a 4 hour drive. Cultural activities include theater, music, a newly renovated opera house, and college and professional sports. The area is renowned for its many fine restaurants. The historic areas of Yorktown and Williamsburg are about a one-hour drive away.
Eastern Virginia Medical School and Norfolk General Hospital, with a level-one trauma center, are in Norfolk.
The Hampton Roads area is home to the world’s largest naval base in Norfolk, as well as two Naval Air Stations, the Naval Amphibious Base, and the home base for two Navy Seal Teams.

Applying
PGY-1 and 2 applications are accepted through Medical Department Accessions Directorate Navy Medicine Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education Command (NAVMED MPT&E) (Code 01S1A). Additionally, we review applications for PGY-1 in ERAS as it provides us additional applicant information. The program offers 6 positions at each of the 4 year levels for a total of 24 residents. A yearly rotation schedule carefully balances the requirements of the Navy for General Medical Officer Training with the intricacy of teaching the skills necessary to handle all aspects of OB/GYN as dictated by the Residency Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Clinical Clerkships
Medical students from USUHS or who are in the HPSP program may rotate on a clinical clerkship in the department. This is an excellent opportunity to learn OB/GYN and to interview for acceptance to various internship programs. The rotation is designed for fourth year students, although third year students will be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Students work daytime shifts, take call overnight and have a designed curriculum and readings, and also attend all conferences. To obtain further information or arrange a clinical clerkship, contact the residency coordinator.
