CT Scan - Oral Contrast

DIRECTIONS FOR CAT SCAN ORAL CONTRAST

You have been scheduled for a CAT scan on _________________ _________ at _______________ in the Radiology Service Line ont the 1sr floor of Building 2, in the Charette Health Care Center.

The CT scan ordered will provide your doctor with important information concerning your abdominal organs.

Please follow the directions below:

Do not eat, drink, or smoke after midnight the day before your exam. If your exam is scheduled after 12 noon, you may eat a light breakfast, then clear liquids until 3 hours before your exam.

NOTIFY THE SCHEDULING CLERK IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO IODINE.

NOTIFY THE SCHEDULING CLERK IF YOU ARE DIABETIC.

Diabetics on insulin may have liquids including juices and soups the day of their exam.

ALL patients should take their scheduled medications.

Some CT studies of the abdomen and pelvis may require rectal contrast. This will be determined the day of the exam by the radiologist.

To perform the CT study, we ask that you drink two (2) bottles of contrast for the study.

-> Drink the 1st bottle of contrast the evening before the exam.

-> Drink the 1/2nd of the 2nd bottle of contrast 1 hour before the exam.

-> Drink the rest of the bottle 30 minutes before the exam.

When you arrive for your appointment, you will be given a third (3rd) bottle of contrast to drink if there is a delay such as an inpatient or emergency add on. This contrast outlines your stomach and digestive tract and helps the radiologist to interpret the CT scan.

Please arrive 30 minutes before your CT appointment.

Thank you for your help and cooperation, as this will aid us in obtaining more information from this test.

Should you have questions, please call the CT Scheduling at (757)953-1160.
