Internal Medicine Internship

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth provides a wide array of experiences that will prepare you not only for residency training, but also operational tours including Flight and Undersea Medicine. PGY1 in internal medicine provides a very strong preliminary year for those choosing careers in Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Pathology, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Neurology or Preventive Medicine. For the past 3 years graduates from the NMCP Internal Medicine internship have been selected for Flight Surgery and Undersea Medicine as well as residency training in Internal Medicine, Radiology, Anesthesiology, and Emergency Medicine.

The Internal Medicine staff physicians and residents are dedicated to teaching and mentoring with excellence, receiving numerous teaching awards each year. Currently, the Medicine Department consists of 45 staff physicians certified in 11 subspecialties, 19 PGY-1 interns, 11 PGY-2 residents, and 9 PGY-3 residents.Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is located in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, home to the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet. As the largest military treatment and referral center for a population of 450,000 beneficiaries, the Internal Medicine program at NMCP thrives on exposure to a diverse patient population with a wide range of diseases and pathology.

Over 50,000 patient encounters took place in the outpatient clinic last year as well as over 4,000 inpatients admitted on the Internal Medicine wards.
