The Navy Entomology Center of Excellence (NECE) is the only Department of Defense (DoD) activity dedicated to world-wide operational entomology support to include development and evaluation of novel products and insecticide application technologies to better protect deployed forces from insects and other arthropods (vectors) that transmit human disease.
Since September 11, 2001, NECE personnel have filled 30 Individual Augmentee deployments totaling over 14 years of boots on the ground support to the war-fighter. Using extensive field experience, NECE personnel provide vector-borne disease subject matter expertise to afloat and shore commands, the joint services, United States governmental agencies, partner nations, international governing bodies and non-governmental organizations.
Testing and Evaluation
NECE is internationally recognized as the expert in evaluating public health insecticide delivery systems. We serve as the DoD’s lead agency in the Deployed War-Fighter Protection (DWFP) program which focuses on finding better methods and tools to protect our service members. Since 2004, we have worked with over 120 collaborators to produce in excess of 310 peer-reviewed publications and 12 patents (with 6 additional patents pending), screen over 2000 novel chemicals for potential public health application, create smartphone applications for information transfer and evaluate 6 new pieces of pesticide dispersal equipment that are currently available for deployment.
Training and Readiness
NECE provides Environmental Protection Agency approved Pesticide Applicator Certification training, Operational Entomology training and we are the program manager for Shipboard Pest Control certification.
