12/27/2012 - USS HIGGINS SAILORS MAKE THE HOLIDAYS A LITTLE BRIGHTER FOR NMCSD PEDIATRIC PATIENTS

SAN DIEGO -- Sailors from the destroyer, USS Higgins (DDG-65) donated gifts and food to Naval Medical Center San Diego's (NMCSD) pediatric hematology and oncology in-patient ward making the holidays a little brighter for the special group of patients Dec. 21. Higgins' Yeoman 1st Class Jaime Saenz's daughter, Isabella, is currently a patient in NMCSD's hematology and oncology in-patient ward and learned that past sponsors for the in-patient ward were not able to provide a holiday party this year. So Saenz approached his fellow shipmates in Higgins' First Class Petty Officer Association for help.

12/26/2012 - NMCSD LEADING THE DoD WITH NEW PHOTO ARCHIVING AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

SAN DIEGO-- Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) is the first Department of Defense (DOD) Military Treatment Facility (MTF) to install the most up-to-date medical digital picture imaging software called Carestream, a picture, archiving and communication system (PACS), allowing clinicians from all medical specialties to view and examine patients X-ray's more readily through an organized database.

12/20/2012 - NMCSD SLEEP LAB ADDS HOME STUDIES

SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) reopened the Sleep Disorder Center pulmonary sleep lab in October 2012 and has added at-home studies in addition to evaluations at the hospital, which allow staff to conduct approximately three times the amount of sleep studies. NMCSD conducts sleep studies to assist in diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in active duty service members, military retirees, and beneficiaries.

12/20/2012 - NMCSD ANNOUNCES CLINIC NAME CHANGE AND TWO NEW CLINICS

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) is in the process of changing the names of three existing outpatient clinics as well as adding two new NMCSD outpatient clinics in the San Diego metropolitan area with grand openings scheduled for February 2013.

12/17/2012 - NMCSD'S TOP EDUCATOR EARNS NATIONAL AWARD

SAN DIEGO – One of Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) staff member’s is the first military recipient of the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award. Director of Professional Education, Capt. Richard Green, has been selected as the winner of the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award, which will be presented during the National Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) conference March 2013 in Orlando, Fla.

12/10/2012 - NMCSD'S PATHOLOGY PROGRAM REACCREDITED FOR TWO MORE YEARS

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) Pathology program obtained a two-year reaccreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) through October 2014. Over two days, the Pathology department reviewed policies and procedures to ensure adherance to the current practices and any new requirements since the last accreditation in 2010. The process involved the review of records, staff training, revision of policies and procedures, and inventory management of consumables.

12/10/2012 - NMCSD STAFF SAVE A LIFE AT THE ZOO

SAN DIEGO – Nov. 23 began like any other day for two Sailors assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD). Ensign Janean Wujek and Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Stephanie Moor were spending their liberty with loved ones at the San Diego Zoo. In a matter of moments, however, what started out as a leisure activity quickly turned into a life-saving situation when the two Sailors’ training was called into action.

12/06/2012 - NMCSD'S TOBACCO CESSATION PROGRAM WORKS TO KICK BAD HABITS

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) Health and Wellness Department offers a Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program to help tobacco users kick the habit. The program is free of charge and is open to all eligible beneficiaries on a walk-in basis. Cigarette smoking accounts for an estimated 443,000 deaths, or nearly one of every five deaths, each year in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

12/03/2012 - NMCSD'S NEW HEAD PROSTHETIST GETS AMPUTEES MOVING

SAN DIEGO - As children, when we fall off our bikes the first time riding without training wheels, when we sprain our ankles playing football, or when we take a line drive to the shins during a baseball game, we are encouraged to stand up, dust ourselves off, and get back in the game. As adults, we'll go on to face bigger obstacles and more troubling injuries, but that voice is always there in the back of our head, telling us not to give up and helping us get back on our feet.

12/03/2012 - NMCSD PHARMACY GETS A NEW PRESCRIPTION FOR SUCCESS

SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) main pharmacy is scheduled to undergo a $1.3 million renovation to upgrade and replace the automation dispensing machines beginning January 2013. NMCSD is one of three Navy sites chosen to participate in a “proof of concept” pharmacy automation study funded by the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery to evaluate workflow performance, safety, efficiency and standardization of the new system.

10/22/2012 - NMCSD EXPANDS C5 PROSTHETICS

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care (C5) facility is expanding its prosthetics lab by filling the therapy pool to make room for two additional treatment rooms, a check in area, storage space and a second set of parallel bars. “This first phase of the project took three weeks to complete, which included the filling of the existing pool with gravel, smoothing it out and capping with concrete,” said Lt. Cmdr. Alberto Nieto, NMCSD Facilities Department Head.

10/22/2012 - NMCSD C5 PROGRAM CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego's Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care (C5) program celebrated five years of service in caring for wounded, ill, and injured (WII) patients Oct. 15 to 19. C5 has provided medically-advanced rehabilitation to wounded, ill and injured service members to include prosthetics, physical therapy, occupational therapy, mental health, neurological, Project C.A.R.E. (Comprehensive Aesthetic Restorative Effort), urology, vestibular care, and many other multi-disciplinary medical services to more than 1,600 severely-injured patients through outpatient rehabilitation and inpatient care prior to returning them to active duty or transitioning them to civilian life.

10/18/2012 - SURGEON GENERAL VISITS NHCP

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Vice Adm. Matthew Nathan, U.S. Navy Surgeon General and chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, toured Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton Oct. 18 while visiting various commands on the west coast. While visiting, Nathan met with sailors and staff members and toured the hospital's Physical Therapy and Family Medicine Departments. He also conducted two Admiral's Calls. During the Admiral's Calls, Nathan addressed his vision for Navy Medicine to include medical readiness, the value of U.S. Navy health care, and joint service opportunities. He discussed current military and Navy Medicine issues concerning staff members.

08/23/2012 - NAVAL MEDICAL CENTER SAN DIEGO CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) completed the fourth and final phase of the Emergency Department (ED) renovation project with a grand opening ceremony scheduled for Aug. 23. The $10.1 million four-phase project increased the number of beds, decreased wait times and includes new services like restaurant-style pagers for patients, allowing them the freedom to leave the waiting room. The ED was also revamped to be more efficient and have a more pleasant atmosphere.

07/20/2012 - NMCSD PREPARES FOR 14TH ANNUAL DEFY SUMMER CAMP

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) is currently preparing for its annual Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) camp. The camp will be held at Murphy Canyon Chapel from July 25 to Aug. 3, 2012. "The DEFY mentorship program is available to all NMCSD staff dependents ages 9-12," said NMCSD DEFY Program Coordinator, Chief Hospital Corpsman Ernesto Calvillo.

06/01/2012 - NMCSD OPHTHALMOLOGY CLINIC RESIDENCY PROGRAM RECEIVES MAXIMUM LEVEL

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego's (NMCSD) Ophthalmology Clinic received the maximum level of accreditation for its residency program from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) through April 2017. To maintain accreditation, NMCSD's Ophthalmology Clinic residency program must ensure continuous oversight and undergo internal review by an ACGME residency review committee demonstrating that accreditation standards are being met...

04/23/2012 - NMCSD DEBUTS BIOSKILLS TRAINING CENTER

SAN DIEGO - SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) unveiled a major upgrade to one of its training facilities during a grand opening ceremony April 23. The hospital's 450-square-foot Surgical Training Lab had been in use since 1998. 03/19/2012 - NMCSD'S RADIATION ONCOLOGY CLINIC EARNS ACCREDITATION RENEWAL

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego's (NMCSD) Radiation Oncology clinic has been accredited through the American College of Radiology (ACR) through February 2015. According to the ACR, the accreditation process "provides radiation oncologists with third-party, impartial peer review and evaluation of patient care, [while examining] the facility's personnel, equipment, treatment planning and treatment records, as well as patient safety policies, quality control and quality assessment activities" (www.acr.org).

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego commemorated the first day of January by welcoming the first baby born in 2012. Rhizelle Poniente was born Jan. 1, at 1:33 p.m. PST to retired Navy 1st Class Petty Officer Mike Poniente and his wife Marites. Rhizelle weighed 6 lb. 8 oz. and measured 20 inches in length.
