BE: Prevent Holiday Stress

The holiday season kicks off with Halloween and continues through New Year’s Day! One uninvited guest the season inevitably brings is - stress. Most of us face a frenzied holiday schedule (cleaning, parties, cooking, shopping, hosting, etc.). There’s hardly time to appreciate the meaning of the season, much less to take a breath!

The daunting fact is stress can ruin your holiday season and can negatively impact your health too. Utilize the following five tips to help minimize stress and enjoy the season.

5 Tips to prevent holiday stress:

  • 1. Be gentle with yourself.
  • No one (but you) says you have to do everything on your to do list! What would happen if you didn’t do everything on your to-do-list? The answer is likely nothing! Be realistic about your expectations and don’t sweat the small stuff.

  • 2. Plan.
  • Planning helps to prevent last minute scrambling that always makes things seem more stressful than they are.

  • 3. Celebrate the beauty of imperfection.
  • Relax. So your kids want to decorate with Easter bunnies and wear neon outfits for Santa? Let it go, and focus on enjoying the meaning of the season (things are a lot more fun that way)!

  • 4. Say no.
  • Practice saying, “that sounds fun, I will let you know tomorrow,” before saying yes to anything. This helps prevent feeling overwhelmed when you accidently (well-intentioned) say yes to things you don’t have the time for.

  • 5. Maintain your healthy habits.
  • Eating poorly only adds to your holiday stress (both mentally and physically). Try to eat a healthy snack before attending an event so you don’t overindulge on unhealthy treats. Also, try and maintain your regular exercise and sleep routine!

Be proactive and take these positive steps to prevent or manage your stress this holiday season!
