DO: Senior Wellness Program


Joyce Dicicco has been leading the Senior Wellness Program at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) for 15 years. The program is the only comprehensive class for older adults in the Navy medical community. The Senior Wellness Program boasts a returning group of attendees, one of whom has attended this program for the last 14 years!

What is this thriving program’s secret?

First and foremost, a program facilitator who is passionate about working with seniors and understands the value of exercise for improved quality of life, and better mental and physical health. The Senior Wellness program also has a dedicated team of community resource leaders and the latest information on senior-relevant topics

Why is this program appropriate for you or a loved one?

Research from the Center for Disease and Prevention has found that regular, physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health, as you get older. Exercise has also been associated with improved mental and social health. For these reasons or perhaps for the sense of community, participants have expressed great satisfaction with their experience, and many return to the course. A pre and post survey from many participants also indicates an improvement in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and depression levels.

The sessions include:

  • 1 hour of exercise designed for older adults such as laughter yoga, and chair dancing.
  • 30 minutes of brain challenges.
  • One hour of various, relevant health lecture topics such as nutrition, diabetes, fall-prevention, and musical therapy.

Program Details:

Participants: Tricare beneficiaries and staff 65-years and older

Schedule: Wednesdays, 9:30a.m. - 12:00p.m. at the Health and Wellness Center at NMCSD, Building 26. Next session starts January 20, 2016. The first day will begin at 9:00a.m. with orientation.
