DO: 2016…Make This Your Year to Quit!

The end of a calendar year is a great time to set your health and wellness goals for the New Year.  Make 2016 THE year you quit smoking for good.  Here are five tips from Smokefree.gov on how to quit:

  • 1. Speak Up
  • Tell your friends and family about your quit day. Ask them for support during the first few days and weeks.

  • 2. Make a plan
  • Get the support you need, either by developing your own quit plan or finding a quit program that works for you. A quit plan combines strategies that help you stay focused, confident and motivated to quit. Click Here for a listing of upcoming classes at NMCSD!

  • 3. Get Busy
  • It might seem simple, but staying busy is one of the best ways to stay smoke-free on your quit day. Try one of these activities:

    • Go for a walk
    • See a movie
    • Call a friend
    • Eat at a smoke-free restaurant

  • 4. Avoid Triggers
  • Triggers are the people, places, things, and situations that trigger your urge to smoke. On your quit day, it's best to avoid them all together.

  • 5. Stay Positive
  • Quitting smoking happens one minute, one hour, one day at a time. Pay attention to right now, and the days will add up! Day one isn’t going to be perfect, but all that matters is you don’t smoke. Not even one puff. Reward yourself for being smoke-free for 24 hours. You deserve it!
