MOVE: BENEFITS OF THE BIKE

Riding a bike can add fitness that’s fun to your day. It’s also a great way to spend quality time with your family. Anytime is the right time to start family bike treks, but starting when your kids are young will build healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children should be getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Unfortunately, too many children in the U.S. (and adults too) don’t get nearly enough of their daily dose of activity. Without enough exercise, children are at risk for being obese and that can lead to bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, social and psychological problems like poor self-esteem, and even chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes.

Want to prevent all that? Go for a family bike ride and experience the benefits of the bike:

  • Children who ride bikes 3-4 times a week are 85% more likely to become normal-weight adults
  • Biking can reduce depression in overweight kids
  • Increases heart and lung function
  • Tones muscles
  • Increases lower-back strength
  • Biking lets kids have fun, learn independence, and explore their neighborhood

Before heading out for a ride, follow these tips to keep your family safe:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Have a front lamp that can be seen from 300 feet
  • Make sure you have reflectors on each pedal
