BE: HIIT Your 2016 Fitness Resolution


We are just days away from 2016. And whether or not that means going to a party (with a Designated Driver, of course) or falling asleep well before the ball drops, you are probably preparing a New Year’s resolution. If becoming more physically fit is a goal for 2016, but you don’t have the time, we have the solution for you.

HIIT. HIIT is an acronym for high-intensity interval training. HIIT workouts include small bursts of high-intensity exercise wedged in between areas of low-intensity workouts or periods of rest. How exactly does one measure high and low intensity, you ask? It’s all about rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and is completely subjective—your highest RPE might differ from your friends, and that is okay! The benefits of HIIT workouts can be performance based AND make you healthier:

  • 1. You might be helping your body to create and use energy better.
  • 2. Along with this, you might improve health and lung function.
  • 3. You might see a reduction in that hard to get rid of fat: think the fat around your abdomen and thighs.
  • 4. Possibly decrease your total bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good stuff (HDL).

HIIT has recently become a popular workout, due to the short amount of time (20-30 minutes), and sometimes with no equipment. With HIIT, you don’t necessarily need to leave the comfort of your home to work out.

If you are starting your workout journey, be sure to consult your provider first to make sure it is safe for you to start incorporating HIIT routines. Everyone’s body is different, be sure to balance challenging yourself and being safe about your workouts.
