SAN DIEGO – The Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) Diversity Office partnered with The Diversity Training Group (DTG) to present “Diversity Today,” a diversity training course for staff at Naval Medical Center San Diego Aug. 8 to 11.
BUMED’s presentation is designed to highlight the importance of diversity and demonstrate how diversity has continuously strengthened the U.S. Navy work force.
“The ‘Diversity Today’ presentation is pretty much a traveling road show that we put together at BUMED to come out and educate people at medical treatment facilities and Navy Medicine commands throughout the world and bring them up to speed on the importance of diversity,” said Capt. Marvin Jones, Navy medicine chief diversity officer.
Jones assumed position as the chief diversity officer more than two years ago and has helped present approximately 260 diversity presentations at 38 commands worldwide.
Along with Jones presenting was Mauricio Velásquez, president of The DTG. He has trained more than 450,000 people throughout his career in the areas of diversity, mentoring, gender equity and multicultural marketing and selling.
“Diversity is not one of those things that are going to change,” said Jones. “As we become more diverse, the program will be much more relevant and important to our lives.”
BUMED plans to continue the ‘Diversity Today’ program and keep service members informed on diversity. “I think the training was outstanding. It’s definitely what we needed in the Navy,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Peter Kamau, a ‘Diversity Today’ participant. “Personally the training has already made a big difference in my life.”
Since accepting the role as Navy medicine chief diversity officer, Jones has become passionate for his career. He enjoys being able to make a difference in people lives.
“I think if one person walks out of there with a different perspective on diversity we’re on the right track,” said Jones. DTG’s clients include many small and large organizations including the U.S. Navy, Army and Coastguard.
