Submit our online Customer Comment Card! The Department of OB/GYN is focused on providing comprehensive, compassionate, state-of-the-art obstetrical and gynecological care. We are proud to offer easy access to continuity of care with the medical provider of your choice in a family-centered setting. We provide obstetric and gynecological care to active duty women, retired military, dependent wives and daughters upon a referral basis. Our services include routine GYN, prenatal care, and labor and delivery. Subspecialty clinics are available by referral for dysplasia (follow-up of women with abnormal Pap smears), maternal-fetal medicine, infertility work-ups, complex GYN such as surgical consultations, pelvic pain, URO-GYN (bladder problems).
Practices in the OB/GYN Department
Both GYN and prenatal care are provided in the framework of small group practices within the hospital setting. Each group practice consists of a combination of OB/GYN medical doctors, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, nurses, corpsmen, medical assistants and medical clerks. Women may choose to meet several providers in a particular group practice or may have the opportunity for continuity with one provider. Women experiencing normal pregnancies and those requiring routine GYN care may elect to be seen by the nurse midwifery team at NTC or Miramar. Practices in the OB/GYN Department providing services for active duty, retired military, and dependent women include the Azure and Teal Teams at NMCSD, and the Nurse Midwife Teams at NTC and MCAS Miramar. GYN appointments will be scheduled by referral only. Active Duty Women annual appointments can be scheduled by the military member.
Locations of Services
Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics are located in NMCSD on the first floor of Building 3; and the Nurse Midwife teams at NTC Medical Branch Clinic (2051 Cushing Road, Building 624) and MCAS Miramar Branch Clinic.
NMCSD is pleased to offer patients enrollment in our Centering Pregnancy Program. Patients have the option of participating in a special prenatal program which is an alternative to receiving care in the clinic setting. This program is designed specifically for women who are interested in learning as much as possible during their pregnancy, and who would enjoy meeting other pregnant women and sharing the experience of pregnancy with them. NMCSD has achieved national recognition by the Centering Healthcare Institute as an approved Centering Pregnancy site.
Women interested in Centering are placed in a group with 10-12 other pregnant women who are due to deliver about the same time. There are 7 sessions of two hours each that are scheduled throughout your pregnancy. Each of these sessions will provide time for individual physical assessment (your weight, blood pressure, baby's growth, etc.), discussion about pregnancy, birth, and new babies, and time to share with the other women. The sessions will be led by a Certified Nurse Midwife and another staff member. After your baby is born, there will be a postpartum 'reunion', which is a unique opportunity to share your birth story and your baby with the others in the group.
Many women who participate in this type of prenatal care develop strong and long lasting friendships with the women in their group. Your baby's father or other support people are welcome to attend with you. Please do not bring your other children with you as you will not be able to care for them during your visit. There is drop-in care available at the Childcare Resource Center which is open during the hours of the group sessions and can provide childcare if desired.
We are excited about this program. It combines the three important parts of prenatal care: assessment, education, and support, into one whole. This means that you won't have to come for separate, individual visits unless you have a medical problem that needs close watching. All of your time spent here should be productive and fun!
If you have any questions, please ask. After your initial OB visit, let your provider know if you want to join a group with other women who are due about when you are. You will be given a schedule of all of the sessions for the group you join. The Centering groups are held at the Naval Medical Center San Diego.
