WHAT IS INPATIENT/SPECIALTY CARE?

A Specialist is a doctor who, as the name implies, specializes in a particular type of medicine, like Dermatology, Pediatrics, Endocrinology, Podiatry, or Gastroenterology. If you need to see a medical specialist, NMCSD has several specialists on staff.

For most everyday medical conditions, your PCM is your one-stop medical shop. Typically your PCM will see you at the first interaction within the health care system. However, there are cases when it’s time to see a specialist who’s had additional education and been board certified for that specialty. For example, if your PCM decides it’s time for you to see a neurologist because you’ve been having seizures, your PCM will refer you to a neurologist; then that neurologist may treat you or may even refer you further to a “subspecialist,” such as an epileptologist, to ensure you'receive the best care to treat your diagnosis.
