Captain Frederick Yeo assumed command of the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory in May 2015. His prior assignment was Submarine Force Surgeon, Commander Submarine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Prior assignments include Department Head of Nephrology, National Naval Medical Center and Nephrology Specialty Advisor for the Navy Surgeon General.
A native of New Jersey, Captain Yeo enlisted in the Navy in 1979 directly out of High School. His 12 year enlisted career included numerous operational tours with the Seabees, notably with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion-74 with deployments to Guam, Newfoundland, Sigonella, Midway, and other operational theaters.
Captain Yeo completed his undergraduate studies in Chemistry, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Central Florida and received his Medical Degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Captain Yeo completed his Internal Medicine residency training at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and Nephrology Fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. During his tenure at National Naval Medical Center, Captain Yeo served in numerous capacities including Nephrology Department Head, Dialysis Director, Key Internal Medicine Faculty, Credentials Committee, CMEO, Scientific Review Board, and National Capital Consortium Nephrology Fellowship Assistant Program Director.
Captain Yeo is a qualified Navy Diver and Undersea Medical Officer and is qualified in Submarines.
Other important operational tours include Officer-in-Charge, Camp Virginia Medical Clinic, Kuwait, and Senior Medical Officer USS Eagle, the Keystone Coast Guard 4 Mast Sailing Vessel.
Captain Yeo's personal decorations include the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Coast Guard Operational Service Medal, and various unit and campaign awards. Captain Yeo is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He is a designated Naval Master Training Specialist. He has twice been awarded the James Leonard Award for Excellence in Medical Teaching, Uniformed Service University of The Health Sciences 2004, 2008.
