Watchstanding Study

SUBMARINE WATCHSTANDING STUDY

Goal: To compare 18-hour watchstanding schedules with a 24-hour based schedule.

Goals of research:

  • During operational underway missions aboard U.S. Navy SSBN and SSN submarines, determine the operational viability of a biologically-based watchstanding schedule.
  • Measure physiological parameters of submariners to determine circadian entrainment during the traditional 18-hour watchstanding schedule and compare with the biologically-based schedule
  • Compare submariners' cognitive performance and subjective sleepiness while following each watchstanding schedule
  • Evaluate watchstanders’ perception of the biologically-based schedule, to evaluate its acceptability for operational employment

Watchstanding Schedules examined:

 I. 18-hour based (6 hours on / 12 hours off)

 II. Biologically-based (8 hours on / 16 hours off)
