Lieutenant Commander Root is a native of Saint Louis, Missouri. She graduated high school and joined the United States Army Reserves in 1999. After completing Basic Training, she attended Combat Medic and Physical Therapy Specialist training San Antonio, Texas.
 
In December of 2004 she graduated from University of Missouri, St. Louis, MO where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. That same year she was mobilized to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX to support Operation Enduring Freedom. She served with the Fifth Army Division, earning instructor qualification and advanced to Staff Sergeant.   
 
In the fall of 2006 she was accepted to graduate school and returned to Reserve status. She earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2009 from Southwest Baptist University, MO.
 
In March 2010 she commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Medical Service Corps and reported to her first command at Naval Hospital Okinawa. She served as the Division Officer for the Physical/Occupational Therapy Department until her deployment to Afghanistan April 2012. During Operation Enduring Freedom she served as Division Officer for the Warrior Recovery Center in Kandahar until January 2013. Upon returning to Naval Hospital Okinawa, she completed a Master of Science in Health Sciences and shortly thereafter transferred to Naval Hospital Pensacola, where she served as the Physical/Occupational Therapy Department Head for 2 years.  She currently holds the position as the Naval Branch Health Clinic- Corry Station Officer in Charge. 
 
In 2015 she completed Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency program and passed the Orthopedic Certified Specialist exam. She also earned the Navy’s Executive medicine designation.
 
Lieutenant Commander Root’s decorations include: two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal.
 
She married her husband LCDR Bruce Matchin in 2013 in Pensacola and they have a daughter, Emily.
