Captain Melissa A. Barnett
Nurse Corps, United States Navy

Captain Barnett received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1995 and joined the Navy as a direct accession.  After completing Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island she reported to her first duty station at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.  While there, she worked in Inpatient Surgery, Same Day Surgery, and Post Anesthesia Care prior to her acceptance and completion of the Navy’s Perioperative Nurse training program.
In 1998, she transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego as a member of the Main Operating Room team.  She worked in a variety of specialties before being hand selected for the role of Charge Nurse for General Surgery and also as a member of the Cardiothoracic Team.  During her four years in San Diego, she gained a wealth of knowledge about the perioperative setting as well as the basics of mentoring and deckplate leadership.
In 2003, as a newly reported staff member to Naval Hospital, Naples Italy, her efforts in the transfer of perioperative services from the Agnano facility to the newly constructed hospital in Gricignano led to her selection as the Department Head for Perioperative Services.  Her leadership was instrumental in organizing a new worksite to support a surgical caseload more than double that of the prior facility without any major disruptions in patient care services.

Upon her return to the United States, she reported to the Operating Room at Naval Hospital Pensacola, Florida.  While there, she functioned as Charge Nurse, Assistant Department Head, and Department Head before her departure in 2008 to Camp Lejeune, NC.

During her time onboard Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, she served as the Division Officer for the Main Operating Room and Interim Department Head for Perioperative Services prior to her deployment to the Expeditionary Medical Facility in Kuwait in 2011.  A member of the last Navy medical team, she was instrumental in the surgical treatment of active duty service members forward deployed and turnover of 100% of controlled substances to the U.S. Army 325th CSH, as the Chair, Controlled Substances Inventory Board.

While serving as the Director of Surgical Services at Naval Hospital Naples, Italy, she fostered a team centered work environment and encouraged staff development daily for 58 personnel who completed more than 2,000 outpatient visits and 500 surgical procedures annually.

She is currently serving as the Officer In Charge (OIC) for the Naval Branch Health Clinic in Millington, TN.  Her leadership of 106 staff is ensuring safe high quality patient centered outpatient care for more than 30,000 beneficiaries across the Mid-South region.

Barnett is a Certified Nurse in the Operating Room (CNOR) and is a member of the Association of periOperative Nurses as well as the Military Officers Association of America.  In addition to her Bachelors degree, she holds a Masters of Arts degree in Health Services Management as well a Masters of Business Administration.  Her personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

CAPT Barnett is married to Ryan, with whom she shares the joys of a fifteen year old daughter.
