Mental Health

Welcome to Mental Health and Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP)

In our mental health department, we provide a full range of outpatient psychiatry and psychology services to active duty service members, retirees, and dependents ages 18-64. Our clinic provides a wide range of mental health interventions, to include individual and group psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management. As a military treatment facility, we conduct a full range of military specific evaluations and evidence based treatments. Current specialty interventions being offered in our clinic include a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for PTSD, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

In our Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP), we provide a full range of outpatient and inpatient services to active duty service members struggling with substance abuse/dependence. We offer individual and group counseling as well as psychoeducation regarding responsible alcohol use. Individuals are able to access services in the SARP clinic, via their Command Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor (DAPA). Individuals concerned that they may be experiencing substance abuse should contact their Command DAPA and self-refer for services.

Family Medicine

Family practice provides continuing and comprehensive health care for active duty family members and retirees. It is the specialty clinic that integrates the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences. The scope of family practice encompasses ages 2 months through 64 years, both sexes and most medical conditions. Currently BMC, Gulfport does not provide services to Senior Prime and OB patients. The closest medical facility supporting Senior Prime and OB patients is Keesler Medical Center in Biloxi, Ms.

GPT Family practice includes a family practice physician and staff members who possess unique attitudes, skills, and knowledge which qualifies them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health maintenance and preventive services to each patient. Family practice is best qualified to serve as each patient’s advocate in all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of consultants, health services, and community resources.

Health Benefits Advisor (TRICARE)

Branch Medical Clinic Gulfport is a TRICARE facility. We and the TRICARE Service Center work together to meet your health care needs. Questions concerning your care or accessing network providers can be addressed Humana Military Healthcare Services (228) 444-5445 and located at 2130 Pass Road, Biloxi, or come by and talk to the Health Benefits Advisor who can be reached at (228) 871-2821.

The Health Benefits Advisor provides all eligible beneficiaries with information related to health care needs. If you have questions regarding where to find a physician, what type of physician to care for your needs, insurance questions, payment questions, help with navigating the TRICARE system, these people can find the answer.

Immunizations

Hours of operation:
Monday through Thursday: 0700-1530
Friday: 0700-1200

The immunization clinic provides routine inoculations for all active duty members and eligible DoD civilian personnel as well as all TRICARE Prime Beneficiaries. Immunizations will be entered into patient’s medical records as well as in the electronic medical record for inclusion into Medical Readiness tracking systems. The clinic also provides appropriate immunizations for those members deploying or transferring to overseas locations, as per the guidance of Centers for Disease Control.

Certificate of Immunization Compliance forms for Mississippi schools are available in the clinic.

Laboratory

Hours of operation: Monday through Friday, 0700 - 1530

The laboratory provides services for the active duty members and Tricare Prime beneficiaries enrolled to Naval Branch Health Clinic Gulfport as well as units stationed at Stennis Space Center and the Precommissioned Units in Pascagoula. In house testing is provided for many of the exams required for sick call, physical exams, and occupational health.

The in-house testing performed includes, blood glucose testing, complete blood counts, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, Mono testing, and rapid strep testing.

The staff also collects samples, for more complex and specialty testing, and prepares those samples for transport to laboratories at Keesler Medical Center, Naval Hospital Pensacola, and several commercial laboratories.

All laboratory testing requires electronic orders entered into CHCS by clinic providers. No handwritten prescriptions or orders from outside providers are accepted.

The NBHC laboratory has gained national accreditation from the College of American Pathologists Program (CAP).

Occupational Health

The NBHC Gulfport Occupational Health nurses coordinate with CBC Civilian Personnel Department and the Safety Department, as well as Naval Hospital Pensacola’s Industrial Hygiene Department for a wide variety of programs. These programs encompass civil service and military personnel from Naval Construction Battalion Center and its tenant commands, as well as surrounding military installations.

Many occupations both military and civilian require enrollment into medical surveillance programs in order to track long term exposures to potentially hazardous conditions. Current occupational surveillance programs monitored by Occupations Health Services at NBHC include physical exams for high risk occupations and surveillance programs for hearing conservation and for hazardous materials handlers.

In conjunction with responsibilities for monitoring the various surveillance programs, the Occupational Health Nurses coordinate and perform pulmonary function testing, audiograms, electrocardiograms, visual screenings and assist with interpretation of medical results.

Pharmacy

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 0700-1530. The pharmacy is closed on weekends and Federal Holidays.

The pharmacy is currently staffed with two Certified Pharmacy Technicians who work under the supervision of the Naval Hospital Pensacola Pharmacy department head to provide services to Active Duty members and all enrolled TRICARE Prime Beneficiaries.

All prescriptions must be entered into CHCS by the ordering provider. No handwritten prescriptions will be honored. Prescriptions from outside providers cannot be processed.

New prescriptions will be filled as quickly as possible, however wait times vary. You may be asked to return at a later time to pick up your medication due to extended wait times.

PRESCRIPTION REFILLS MUST BE REQUESTED THROUGH THE AUTOMATED REFILL LINE AT: 1-888-513-4164

Please remember the processing time for refills is five working days, not to include weekends and Federal holidays. Please plan accordingly to ensure you do not run out of your medication.

Please do not request refills at the pharmacy window as those requests WILL NOT be honored.

If you do not pick up your medication within seven days or it will be returned to stock.

If your prescription does not have refills available, please contact Central Appointments to send a request to your provider. Please allow three business days for processing. DO NOT contact the NBHC pharmacy.

Physical Exams

The Physical Examination Department, Branch Medical clinic Gulfport, provides periodic, retirement, separation and various other physical examinations for active duty personnel and NCTC Reserve students. All personnel assigned to a Battalion must go through their respective Medical representative.

Physicals
Presently, we handle physical examinations in a two-step process:
  1. First, a preliminary appointment (pre-lim) is scheduled by the Physical Exams Department. The patient will then be told when to report for fasting blood work (nothing to eat or drink except water for 12 hours prior to the appointment), a dental examination (T-2 Exam), hearing test, visual acuity test, color vision test and completion of all applicable paper work in accordance with the type of physical exam they require.
  2. Once the "prelims" are completed, a second appointment is scheduled by a physical examination staff member to meet with a medical officer for the actual physical examination. This can usually be accomplished within seven days or less.

Preventive Medicine

The Preventive Medicine Department of the Branch Medical Clinic assists Medical Department Officers in the performance of Preventive Medicine and Occupational Health programs for the Navy and Marine Corps forces ashore and afloat.

  • Administers mass immunization programs
  • Conducts nosocomial infection programs

Applies statistical methods to human mortality, morbidity, and demographic studies

Conducts disease vector control programs:
  • Insects, rodents, parasites and other pests
  • Surveys identification, and pesticide application and other control measures

Proficient in medical and sanitary aspects of CBR defense.

Instructs medical and non-medical personnel in areas of preventive medicine and specific environmental health matters.

Services
The Radiology Department will continuously strive to improve our educational and technical levels with the ever changing advances in radiographic technology in turn being able to provide the highest quality of routine diagnostic imaging services to our health care providers to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of all beneficiaries.

Hours of Operation
The Radiology Department is open on normal workdays from 0700-1530 Monday through Friday. The department is closed weekends and holidays.

Availability of Services
Open to all beneficiaries. Our first priority is to active duty members and then beneficiaries enrolled in Tricare Prime. An electronic entry (CHCS) or radiology request chit (SF 519a) is required. Requests from civilian providers will not be honored. Radiographs may be checked out to civilian facilities provided a written request from the physician, the patient's signed release, and a valid military or dependent identification card are presented.

Referral Site
Keesler Air Force Base Medical Center is our referral site for all special procedures to include: Mammography, Cardiovascular/Interventional Radiology, Computerized Tomography (CT), Diagnostic Ultrasound (US), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Radiation Oncology, and Medical Physics. Radiologists interpret all of the radiographs produced in our facility. There is approximately a 48-hour turnaround time from when the exam is produced to when a report is available to the requesting provider by virtue of report on (CHCS) or on the dictation services.

Women's Services

Depo-Provera
The Depo-Provera clinic is part of the Ambulatory Care Clinic under the management of the Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse This clinic is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 0930 - 1330. Appointments are required. Your initial appointment will be with your Primary Care Physician. You are required to have a current PAP smear within the last twelve months. Your medical record is required for all visits. After your initial Depo-Provera injection, your return visits will be every 12 - 13 weeks, provided there are no complications.

Pap Smear
Annual and follow-up PAP smears are performed at the Branch Medical Clinic by appointment only. This examination is done by the Medical Officers, PA's and IDC's. You will be required to have your medical record the day of the appointment. If you are thirty five years old or older, a mammogram will be ordered for you and scheduled at Keesler Medical Center. You will be given the number to contact Keesler Medical Center to schedule the mammogram. After the PAP is complete, it is sent to the lab at Naval Hospital Pensacola. Test results take between 2-3 weeks to return. Test results will be mailed to your home. If you have not received your results within 30 days, please contact the Branch Medical Clinic at 871-2810.

Pregnancy Testing
Pregnancy testing is available Mon-Fri before 1000 as a walk in appointment with the Ambulatory Care Nurse. The nurse will asses the patient and determine if a serum or urine HCG test is needed. Results will be available the same day as the test. NO RESULTS WILL BE GIVEN VIA THE TELEPHONE. Patients with positive results will be referred to their Primary Care Physician. Active Duty patients will have confirmation of pregnancy and duty limitations per OPNAVINST 6000.1B.
