BREMERTON, WA - Navy Lt. Maxwell Anderson addresses a seated crowd during the Mental Health and Wellness Expo 2021, asking those in attendance to focus on the concept of mindfulness. As a staff psychologist attached to Navy Medicine and Training Command (NMRTC) Bremerton, Anderson explained how mindfulness allows someone to be aware in the present, away from lingering on the previous or wondering about the forthcoming. “We can use our five senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch to bring us into the present and help alleviate any stress or anxiety. We’re not in the past or into the future. We’re in the moment,” said Anderson, recommending to use a 5-4-3-2-1 countdown method of the senses to aid in accenting attention on the senses to completely concentrate on the right-now. “Ask yourself, ‘what are five sights you see right now?’ What are four sounds? Three smells?” Anderson rhetorically asked. The short presentation by Anderson was but one facet of the expo held August 5, 2021 and sponsored by NMRTC Bremerton and Naval Base Kitsap Fleet & Family Support Center (Official Navy photo by Douglas H Stutz, NHB/NMRTC Bremerton public affairs officer).
