CAPT Shannon J. Johnson

Captain Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education, with a Special Education Endorsement from Whitworth University in 1988. She was employed as a special education teacher while completing her Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance, also at Whitworth. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology in La Mirada, Calif.
 
She received her commission and reported to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) for her internship year in 1998. Just 10 months into her post-internship assignment at Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB), she reported to the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70), where she served as the battle group psychologist during two Western Pacific deployments.
 
In 2004, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychology at Harvard Medical School/Children’s Hospital Boston. Captain Johnson was then assigned to Naval Hospital Yokosuka for her utilization tour, where she assumed the duties of Director, Educational and Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS) and was responsible for six EDIS divisions across Mainland Japan.  She returned to NMCSD in the fall of 2006, serving as Division Officer for the Fleet Mental Health Clinic on the Naval Base San Diego waterfront, and also carrying out the duties of the NMCSD Command Managed Equal Opportunity Program Manager.
 
In January 2007, she deployed with the U.S. Army 113th Combat Stress Company, Camp Stryker detachment in Baghdad.  She returned to Iraq in August 2008 for a second tour, this time serving with the 1st Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Battalion 5 and spending seven months providing psychological care for Marine Corps units across Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
 
In the fall of 2010, Captain Johnson reported to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton (NHCP), Calif. and was subsequently deployed to Afghanistan with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group. After serving seven months as the Officer in Charge of Alpha Surgical Company, Camp Dwyer Detachment, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, she returned to NHCP and assumed the duties of Director for Mental Health. During her tour she stood up the Warrior Recovery Center and oversaw the delivery of care to United States Marines returning from deployment with combat stress related conditions and Traumatic Brain Injuries.
 
In 2013, she was selected to provide oversight for the full range of Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Abuse Rehabilitation services as the Director of Mental Health at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, while also serving as the Assistant Specialty Leader for Navy Clinical Psychology.  She served as the Executive Officer, NMCSD from June 2017 to June 2019, and the Commanding Officer of NHB from August 2019 to August 2021. In September 2021, Captain Johnson became the deputy commander of Naval Medical Forces Support Command.
 
Over the course of five overseas deployments, she earned her Surface Warfare Medical Officer and Fleet Marine Force Officer qualifications. Personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and various service and unit awards.
