Master Chief John Pettry enlisted in the Navy in June 1994 and completed basic training at Recruit Training Command and Hospital Corpsman "A" School in Great Lakes, Illinois. He then completed Preventive Medicine "C" School and Field Medical Service School in San Diego, CA prior to reporting to his first duty station at 3D Medical Battalion, 3D Force Service Support Group, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, Okinawa Japan.
Upon completion of his initial sea tour, he reported to Naval Hospital Cherry Point, NC and served as Preventive Medicine Technician from 1996-1999. In August 1999, he reported to USS SEATTLE (AOE 3) in Earle, New Jersey, where he served as Medical Department Assistant Leading Petty Officer.
In August 2001 he reported to Naval Undersea Medical Institute, Groton, CT to complete Submarine Force Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) "C" School. Upon graduation he was meritoriously promoted to Hospital Corpsman First Class.
In November 2002 he reported to USS BREMERTON (SSN 698) Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he served as Independent Duty Corpsman. During his tour, he qualified Submarines and was selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer. In November 2006 he reported to Naval School of Health Sciences, San Diego, CA and served as Medicine Instructor and earned his Master Training Specialist qualification. He then reported to Navy Personnel Command, Millington, TN where he served as HM Detailer and Leading Chief for the NEC Section.
Master Chief Pettry reported onboard USS FLORIDA (SSGN 728) in August 2010 and served as Medical Department representative and Radiation Health Officer. He then reported to Naval Branch Health Clinic King's Bay, GA where he served as Senior Enlisted Leader. In September 2016 he reported to USS FRANK CABLE (AS 40) forward deployed in Agana, Guam, where he served as Leading Chief Petty Officer of Health Services Department.
In July 2019 he reported to Naval Health Clinic New England Newport, Rhode Island and currently serves as the Command Master Chief.
Master Chief Pettry is a graduate of Senior Enlisted Academy and has a Master's Degree in Public Health. He is married to Cheryl Pettry and they have two children Ashlan and Caiden. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards) and other various unit and service campaign awards.
