Welcome to the Referral Management Department located on the first floor of the John Henry Balch Clinic.  Our Referral Management Team manages the specialty referral process within Naval Health Clinic Quantico and our Branch Clinics (TBS, OCS, and Washington Navy Yard by reviewing referrals, sending them to Health Net for authorization for civilian care, and working with patients and providers to assure that appropriate care is obtained.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I get a Specialty Referral?

    The Primary Care Manager (PCM) is responsible for all medical care for Tricare Prime patients.  If a need for specialty  care is seen when the PCM evaluates the patient during a clinic visit, the PCM will order the care needed by entering a referral to the appropriate specialist into the CHCS/ALTHA system.  All specialty referral renewals and changes need to go through your PCM.

  2. How do I make a Specialty  appointment?

    The beneficiary is responsible for making his/her own appointments.  The beneficiary will wait two days and call  Central Appointments at:  1-855-CAPMed1 (1-855-227-6331).  If specialty care is available at your MTF (Military Treatment Facility) or any local area MTF, Central Appointing will schedule the appointment.  If a specialty appointment is not available at  the MTFs, your referral will be forwarded to Referral Management for final review and processing to HealthNet ( the area TRICARE contractor).  HealthNet will locate a specialist in the civilian network and the beneficiary will receive a letter from HealthNet in 7 - 10 days with information regarding the specialist name, contact information, number of approved visits, and the authorization number.  The beneficiary then calls the specialist named in the letter to schedule an appointment.

  3. Referral Expiration

    Your referral will expire 28 days from the date it was written.  If an appointment has not been made within the 28 days, you may need to contact your PCM for a new referral at 703-784-1725 or  1-855-CAPMed1 (1-855-227-6331). 
  4. Need to change or cancel your Specialty Appointment?

    If your specialty appointment is at an MTF, call 1-855-CAPMed1 (1-855-227-6331).  If your appointment is with a civilian specialist, call the specialist office directly.  Then please notify HealthNet of your appointment change at: 1-877-874-2273 (1-877-TRICARE)

  5. Experiencing difficulty with a referral deferred to HealthNet? 

    Contact HealthNet at 1-877-874-2273 (1-877-TRICARE)
         a.  To check on the status of your referral
         b.  To obtain the specialist information, if you do not receive a letter from HealthNet within 5-7 days
         c.  To request a different specialist, if needed.
