Childbirth Education Classes

U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan is committed to providing expectant parents with an amazing birth experience.  Our classes strive to offer information and techniques that will promote a healthy, fulfilling birth experience, along with confident parenting.  Knowing what to expect during the labor and birthing process can allow expectant parents to focus more on the birth and less on the unknown.

*All classes are held in Building 972, Classroom 7 (second floor).

Prepared Childbirth
Event Time: 4 part series (3hr class each week taught over a 4 week period)
When: Recommended to be taken between 30-36 weeks gestation, register early!
Who: Class is designed for first time moms
Event Description:
This 4-part (12 total hours) childbirth education course covers basic anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, how to prepare for labor and delivery through relaxation and breathing techniques, addresses the stages of labor, pain management options, the birthing process, recovery, initial postpartum period, and basic newborn care.  We will also discuss the medical interventions in labor as well as cesarean births.  Throughout the course, current hospital procedures will be discussed.  Expectant parents will view labor and birth stories, have direct access to online literature, and tour the labor and delivery department.  Partners are welcome and encouraged to attend all 4 classes.

Childbirth Basics
Event Time: 2 hour class
When: Recommended to be taken between 30-36 weeks gestation
Who: Class is designed for experienced parents
Event Description:
This childbirth education course is a refresher course for experienced parents.  It covers the signs and stages of labor, when to come to the hospital, a refresher on how to prepare for labor and delivery through relaxation and breathing techniques, re-examination of pain management options, a refresher of the recovery process, the initial postpartum period, as well as information on hospital procedures.  This class will have direct access to online literature and tour the labor and delivery department upon completion.  Partners are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Welcome to Pregnancy
Event Time: 2 hour class
When: Recommended to be taken upon confirmation of pregnancy
Who: Class is designed for both first time and experienced parents
Event Description:
This childbirth education course is an overall view of what to expect here at the U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan during your pregnancy.  Some topics that will be discussed are: normal pregnancy symptoms, routine visits, emergencies and where to present for evaluation, our travel policy, and Typhoon policy.  Local representatives from WIC, Air Force and Marine New Family Support, and Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society attend to present information on services they provide for all expectant parents.  Partners are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Breastfeeding 101
Event Time: 2 hour class
When: Recommended to be taken between 30-36 weeks gestation, register early!
Who: Class is designed for anyone who would like more information on breastfeeding
Event Description:
Breastfeeding 101 is an introductory course to the wonderful art of breastfeeding.  Topics that will be covered are benefits to mom and baby, correct positioning and latching, frequency of feedings, how to know if your baby is getting enough, going back to work while breastfeeding, partner support and proper self-care during breastfeeding.  Partners are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Silly Sibling
Event Time: 2 hour class
Who: Siblings ages 3-8
Event Description:
This class is designed to prepared young children to become big brothers and big sisters.  The class will focus on what new babies do, how to assist the family in helping mom, as well as why being a big brother and big sister is so special.  Children will learn how to safely hold a newborn allowing them to begin their journey on becoming a super silly sibling!  The class will tour the labor and delivery department following the end of the class.  Please provide the number of siblings you are bringing to the class to the receptionist when you call to register.

Mother Infant Care Center (MICC) Tour
Event Time: 1 Hour Tour
When: Recommended after 20 weeks gestation
Event Description:
U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan's MICC (Mother Infant Care Unit) is a 14 bed labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum unit and is able to accommodate a multitude of birthing options.  Expectant parents can take a guided tour of the MICC (Mother Infant Care Center) in order to better familiarize themselves with the triage area, birthing suites, and waiting area for family.  This will also be a chance to ask questions in a relaxed setting.  If you have a number of questions regarding the labor and birthing process, we encourage you to register for one of our childbirth education classes.

Breastfeeding Friends Forever Support Group
Event Time: 2 hours
Who: Anyone needing breastfeeding support and lactation services.
When: Tuesdays from 12:15pm to 2:00pm
Event Description:
U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan employs one full time International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Many opportunites to attend breastfeeding support groups are provided and encouraged. Breastfeeding can sometimes be emotionally challenging and surrounding yourself with other mothers will provide you with the confidence, encouragement, and emotional support that is often needed to establish a healthy breastfeeding relationship. Groups are offered weekly on the 4th floor in the Perinatal Classroom.

Multiples Support Group
Event Time: 2 hours
Who: Anyone expecting multiples or has multiples on island
When: Mondays from 12:15pm to 2pm
Event Description: 
Come join others with multiples to share questions, stories, and advice.  Open to anyone who is expecting mulitples or is currently on island who has multiples.
