Mission Statement

It is the mission of the U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa (USNHO) Environmental Health Department to execute measures intended to mitigate, prepare for, and respond to health risks resulting from potential environmental exposures, including food and water-borne illnesses.  The mission is accomplished through the identification, surveillance and control of disease and injuries to active duty service members and beneficiaries through the following:

  1. Perform water and ice testing, food service, habitability, and childcare inspections.
  2. Provide a variety of educational services to include:
    • General Food Safety
    • Pest Management
    • Safe Drinking and Recreational Waters
    • Food Safety Employee Training
  3. Collaborate and maintain partnerships with appropriate agencies, boards and organizations including MCCS, Okinawa Prefectural Government Health Ministry, SODEXO, Military Housing, III MEF, and other military commands to solve public health/environmental health issues and carry out other functions as defined by BUMED. 

Operational Functions

​Sanitation Division ​Assess health risks associated with exposure to physical,   chemical and biological factors external to a person and implement measures to reduce any associated illness. The EH/Sanitation Division will focus primarily on minimizing illness through enforcement of sanitation standards, including the inspection of food and water establishments, child care centers, gymnasium and pool facilities, barber shops, and other places where diseases may be spread.
Water Laboratory​ ​The water laboratory implements the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) potable water surveillance program for shore commands, uses Navy Medicine and Japanese Environmental Governing Standards to provide policy for drinking water surveillance and testing on Navy and Marine Corps Bases, and is responsible for all Bacteriological (Bac-T) surveillance of drinking water, ice, swimming pools and recreation beach water on MCIPAC Okinawa Japan Bases, CFAO White Beach, Camp Shields and 10th ASG Torii Station.
​Medical Entomology Division ​Provide professional entomological services to operational Army, Navy and Marine Corps units and support activities, including active duty, DOD civilian employees, their dependents and other beneficiaries. Improve the customers’ quality of life by enhancing safety and health conditions in the workplace and at home. Ensure compliance through the inspection of Provisional and Free Pratiques, Declaration for Quarantine Clearance, and Human and Plant Quarantine Inspection Reports on vessels and other means of transport. Provide mosquito surveillance through collection and identification of adult and larval mosquito samples, and conducts cockroach surveys and ant management through the Department of Defense Pest Management Program.
