Aviation Medicine


Aviation Medicine Department at Branch Health Clinic NAVSTA Norfolk conducts Flight Physical Examinations in a "2-Part" process to enhance efficiency, reduce administrative errors as well as patient wait times.

  1. Part 1, "Prelims":
    Part 1 is consisted of flight physical form pick-up, vitals, eye examination, blood work, EKG (if required), audiogram, and dental examination. Prelims will be completed by our patients on an individual basis.
  2. Part 2, "Flight Surgeon Appointment":
    Appointments with the Flight Surgeon are scheduled by Aviation Medicine Department or the individual squadron's Command Corpsman upon completion of "Part 1" and a thorough record review. Completion of a record review is an essential step in completing the patients Flight Physical Examination to ensure all test results are within Aeromedical standards as well as all waiver (if applicable) requirements are met in accordance with the Aeromedical Reference Waiver Guidelines.
  3. Aviation Medicine Sick Call:
    Aviation Medicine Department provides sick call service for all aviation squadron personnel aboard NAVSTA Norfolk. Patients who presents with injury, illness, or emergent conditions beyond the capabilities of Aviation Medicine Department will be stabilized and referred to the Military Acute Care Department or to an appropriate facility.
  4. Routine Appointments:
    Routine appointments scheduling will be made by calling Aviation Medicine department at 953-8859 or 953-8863 or by contacting your individual squadron's Command Corpsman.
  5. Flight Physical Appointments:
    Flight Physical appointments scheduling will be made once a record review is completed and by calling Aviation Medicine Department at 953-8859 or 953-8863 or by contacting your individual squadron's Command Corpsman.
  6. Departmental operations are as follows:

    Hours of Operation:
    Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 0645-1500
    Thursday 0645-1200
    Aviation Medicine Department is closed in the afternoon due to departmental training.

    Sick Call:
    Morning sick calls are conducted Monday through Friday from 0645-0730.
    Afternoon sick calls are conducted Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1245-1330.
    No afternoon sick calls on Thursday.
    Members may also use the Nurse Advice Line by calling 1-8800-TRICARE (874-2273), Option 1.

    PRELIMS (Vitals, eye examination, EKG):
    Monday through Friday 0730-1100
    If you wear glasses, please make sure to bring your glasses with you. For contact lens wearer, please remove your contact lens the night before and bring your glasses with you.

    RECORD REVIEW:
    Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 0730-1430
    Thursday 0730-1200
    Record review MUST be completed prior to scheduling an appointment with the Flight Surgeon.

    FLIGHT DECK PHYSICAL:
    Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 1230-1330
    Thursday 0730-0830
    If you have 5 or more personnel that requires a flight deck physical completed, the unit MUST send a medical representative to assist in the completion of their flight deck examination.
