The Psychiatry internship year at NMCSD is designed to provide a well-balanced graduate medical education for those trainees aspiring to continue their psychiatry training, in addition to those who subsequently perform operational tours as General Medical Officers (GMO). Trainees are exposed to a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient medicine in an effort to prepare for residency or GMO tour and for licensing exams.
The ACGME requires that there be a minimum of four months in direct patient care responsibility in Internal Medicine, Family Practice and/or Pediatrics. The following 13 four-week rotations comprise the usual clinical rotation schedule for PGY-1 residents:
Substance Abuse / Child Psychiatry
Internal Medicine (Wards)
Family Practice (outpatient)
Critical Care Medicine (CCU)
Operational Medicine (General Practice for active duty)
In addition, each psychiatry intern will participate in a weekly outpatient continuity clinic and carry a patient load of low-acuity psychiatric outpatients. All interns will be certified in BLS and ACLS and will attend an eight-day Combat Casualty Care Course (C4) in San Antonio, Texas.
The overall experience of the PGY-1 Psychiatry Resident is monitored and supervised by the Director of Psychiatry Residency Training. Detailed supervision for PGY-1 Psychiatry Residents is provided by the chief of the service to which they are currently assigned, through the Attending and House staff of that service. PGY-1 residents are also assigned a mentor from among the senior psychiatry residents, who will provide role modeling and mentorship throughout the intern year.
