Welcome aboard and congratulations on your assignment to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery!

The Bureau of Medicine and Surgery serves as the headquarters for all naval medical personnel enabling readiness, wellness, and health care to Sailors, Marines, and their families.  We exercise direct control over all medical professionals and develop policies in alignment with Title 10 Section 5137 for Navy and Marine Corps personnel.  Additionally, in coordination with the Health Affairs and the Defense Health Agency, we work closely to establish a standardized policy for the Department of Defense military medical treatment facilities inside the United States and at our overseas locations.  Whether you are serving directly at headquarters or any of our detachments, the mission of taking care of our personnel and families remains the same; ensuring the readiness of Sailors and Marines and to project medical power in support of naval superiority around the globe.

Our Nation's Capital is a District of Champions, home to the Washington Nationals and Washington Capitals.  D.C. also offers an abundance of wonderful activities.  Visit our museums and historical monuments or take a stroll through one of our many federal cultural buildings.  Most of these activities are within walking distance or can be accessed using the District’s mass transit rail system.  Beyond the traditional D.C. attractions, you will find fresh food, arts, and nightlife scenes.  You can spend your morning perusing the city's cache of farmers markets and contemporary exhibits and your afternoon taking in the scenery from the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument before catching a show at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Your tour in D.C. can be a great and enjoyable experience for you and your entire family.  Further information about Naval District Washington and the surrounding area can be found at www.ndw.navy.mil and www.dcmilitary.com.

Once again, "Welcome Aboard” and I sincerely hope your tour with us will be rewarding both personally and professionally.  We look forward to having you as a member of our team and our staff is standing by to help get you off to a great start!
