by Maj Jeff Baldwin | 08 May 2014 By Heidi Linscott, Naval Health Clinic Quantico Public Affairs NAVAL HEALTH CLINIC QUANTICO, Va. ?Thirteen sailors from the Washington Navy Yard, Branch Health Clinic, Washington, D.C. were honored May 5 for being selected as the Fiscal Year 2013 Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) Shore Chapter of the Year.? The awards were presented to members of the chapter by Rear Adm. Markham K. Rich, commandant, Naval District Washington deputy commander, Joint Forces Headquarters, National Capital Region, Washington, D.C.? [caption id="attachment_764" align="aligncenter" width="620"] Capt. Becker, commanding officer, Naval Health Clinic Quantico, Command Master Chief Carnell Boyd and Members of Washington Navy Yard (WNY) Branch Health Clinic's CSSAD Chapter display their award for beingnamed FY-13 CSADD Shore Chapter of the Year at Anacostia-Bolling Joint Base.(Photo courtesy of WNY Branch Health Clinic) In fiscal year 2013, the chapter participated in 34 volunteer events contributing over 3,200 volunteer hours and $96,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project, Armed Forces Retirement Home and St. Jude Children's Hospital.? The WNY CSADD Chapter also worked with other organizations and associations to inaugurate several programs to increase morale, mentorship, environmental stewardship and constructive decision making.? The programs included sexual assault awareness and prevention, smoking cessation, "Keep What You?ve Earned" campaign, health and physical fitness, and many others.? The ceremony was held at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Israel Castro, Preventive Medicine Technician, Washington Navy Yard Branch Health Clinic, and president of the chapter, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.? Hospital Corpsman 1st Classes Paul B. Groseclose and Leonard Thomas; Hospital Corpsman 2nd Classes Marcus Rose, Charles Carolus and Althea Mateson; Hospital Corpsman 3rd Classes Edwin Ortiz, Joseph Armella, Jeffrey Manuel, and Edwin McCulley; Hospitalmen Tamara Nez, Julio Domingo, Tiny Rose Medallo; and Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class Cory Hill each received a Flag Letter of Commendation.? "We did not accomplish this achievement on our own,? said Castro. ?We were fortunate to receive help from so many avenues, including the command leadership, The Chiefs Mess, the First Class Petty Officer Association, MWR, Liberty Center, the regional volunteer coordinator, the Barracks Council and a lot of other associations. This award belongs to all of us: together, we have set the precedence, but there is more work to be done. Our motto is "Forging the Future" ? aligning with our motto, our mission is to mentor other chapters within our region to achieve this very same recognition!"
