Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center Holds Town Hall in Advance of DHA Transition

The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) held a town hall meeting October 12, 2022 at their Portsmouth, Virginia headquarters, in advance of their transition to the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Public Health directorate.

Rear Adm. Brandon Taylor, Director for DHA Public Health, and Capt. Brian Feldman, Commander, NMCPHC co-hosted the event that was attended both in-person and virtually, by approximately 200 NMCPHC headquarters staff.

Rear Adm. Matthew Case, Commander, Naval Medical Forces Atlantic kicked off the event by welcoming Taylor and his team from DHA Public Health. Case went on to express his thanks, on behalf of Navy Medicine for the hard work and responsiveness of NMCPHC during the pandemic and beyond, while also expressing his support for a smooth transition to the DHA.

Before turning the floor over to Taylor, Feldman, who helped facilitate the town hall, expressed his gratitude to Taylor and his team for their support, as well as his personal support and commitment to the DHA partnership and transition.

“On behalf of NMCPHC we are thankful for your thoughtful engagement and advocacy as we begin our integration and transformation,” said Feldman. “These will serve as the foundation for future success, and we are proud to join the Defense Health Agency to continue to optimize the mitigation and prevention of public health threats to the military family.”

Taylor provided an overview of the transition background and how it will impact the mission of public health delivery to Department of Defense (DoD) servicemembers and families world-wide.

“We recognize that this is a significant transition, but our focus is to minimize disruptions while maintaining capacity and function as we not only standardize and enhance how we protect the force as a whole, but as we start transforming the Department’s public health enterprise for the future,” Taylor said.

The transition is scheduled to take place October 23, 2022. Once the transition occurs, NMCPHC will officially join the DHA as a center for public health delivery and is expecting a name change announcement in the near future. During the initial phase of the transition however, NMCPHC will retain its responsibility to Navy Medicine for providing operation public health support to global Fleet and Marine Corps assets.
Feldman will be “dual-hatted” in his role as NMCPHC Commander and Director for the DHA’s public health facility in Portsmouth.
