07 January 2026

From Petty Officer 1st Class Heath Zeigler - Naval Medical Leader & Professional Development Command

The Tri-Service Optician School (TOPS), a directorate of the Naval Medical Leader and Professional Development Command (NMLPDC), held its graduation ceremony for class 25-010 in Yorktown, Virginia on Dec. 16, 2025.

The graduating class was comprised of 6 Sailors and Soldiers from both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army.

“I’ve been truly impressed by all six of you. You showed up each day, willing to learn,” said Cmdr. Joshua Keil, Dean, TOPS. “It’s not easy to stay motivated and engaged, especially if optics is not something you chose. Some of you may have enjoyed it. As you head to your new duty stations, I charge you to stay motivated, support the war fighter and always do the right thing.”

The ceremony included opening remarks from Capt. James Corbett, commanding officer of NMLPDC, followed by closing remarks from Keil, celebrating the 99th class to graduate.

“My first class as Dean to achieve an American board of Opticianry certification rate of 50%,” said Keil. “Class 25-010 performed exceptionally well.”

Keil and Corbett presented each graduate with their certificates of completion as opticians.

U.S. Navy HM3 Yohannes Gebrai

Since its founding in 1995, TOPS has developed opticians to support clinics on sea and shore as well as the force preservation mission by supplying eyewear to the fleet as they bring sight to the fight. TOPS trains U.S. Army and Navy servicemembers in a rigorous 24-week program, ensuring the respective services have the technical expertise gained through optician studies.

TOPS is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupation Education and the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation and holds two iterations of training per year with a maximum of 30 students per class who earn degree credits through the Uniformed Services University.
