U.S. Naval Hospital Guam Officer Named Navy Pharmacy Junior Officer of the Year

05 May 2026

From Petty Officer 2nd Class John Paul Alba - U.S. Naval Hospital Guam

AGANA HEIGHTS, Guam - The U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery has announced that Lt. Jacob King of U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Guam has been selected as the Navy Pharmacy Junior Officer of the Year for fiscal year 2025. The award recognizes his exceptional leadership, clinical expertise, and profound impact on pharmacy operations and patient care across the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

The formal presentation of the award is scheduled to take place at the 2026 Joint Federal Pharmacy Seminar. King's selection highlights a period of significant achievement, not only for him individually but for the entire USNH Guam Pharmacy department, which was recently named the Navy Pharmacy Team of the Year for 2025. His leadership was a critical component of the team's success.

Among his numerous contributions, King served as a subject matter expert consultant for the joint NATO Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC). In this role, he co-authored new antibiotic recommendations, a pediatric trauma supplement, and developed a novel pediatric trauma medication dosing tape. These contributions, pending publication in theJournal of Special Operations Medicine (JSOM), are set to influence TCCC guidelines for all U.S. and NATO operational forces.

Demonstrating his commitment to readiness, King was the sole junior officer selected as an Initiative Team Lead for the Navy Pharmacy Operational Clinical Community. He spearheaded the development of four quarterly Knowledge Shares and 12 specialty-wide educational sessions focused on burn care, medical ethics, and trauma resuscitation, directly supporting the strategic goals of the Navy Pharmacy Specialty Leader and the Navy Surgeon General.

His operational influence extends across the region, where he serves as the Pharmacy Area Manager for the INDOPACOM Area of Responsibility in the Global Teleconsultation Portal, managing fleet pharmaceutical supply liaisons for all operational units ashore and afloat. Furthermore, he provided Commander, Navy Installations Command with 193 revisions to 48 treatment protocols and a 52-medication formulary, significantly improving the medical readiness of Navy Emergency Medical Services.

A cornerstone of USNH Guam's recent success has been the implementation of a 24/7 pharmacist response protocol for all Level I and II trauma activations, a program in which King was instrumental. As the only pharmacy in the Military Health System (MHS) to respond to 100% of trauma codes, the team's innovative approach has demonstrably improved patient outcomes.

The success of this protocol has led to further academic and professional recognition. A poster presentation, co-authored by King and based on an Institutional Review Board-approved study with the USNH Guam Trauma Department, has been accepted for the 2026 Association of Military Surgeons of the United States Annual Meeting in National Harbor, MD. The presentation, titled "Pharmacist Response to Trauma Activations Decreases Time to Medication Administration During Initial Trauma Resuscitation," will showcase a repeatable model for improving trauma care across the MHS.

Lt. King’s accomplishments reflect a deep commitment to advancing military medicine and ensuring the highest level of care for the warfighter.
