Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Camp Pendleton Establishes Expeditionary Medical Facility 150 – Alpha

30 September 2022

From Curtis Hill

Camp Pendleton, Calif. – On Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Camp Pendleton formally established Expeditionary Medical Facility (EMF) 150 - Alpha during a ceremony aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The command establishment ceremony is a time-honored naval tradition which formally announces, to the officers and personnel of the command, the assumption of the responsibilities and authority of command.

Rear Adm. Guido Valdes, Commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific; Sailors assigned to EMF 150 – Alpha; leaders from EMF – Bravo, NMRTC San Diego; as well as staff from NHCP and NMRTC Camp Pendleton were in attendance for this significant event.

During the ceremony, Capt. Peter Roberts, Commander, NMRTC Camp Pendleton and Director, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton (NHCP), introduced EMF 150 - Alpha’s commanding officer, Capt. Elizabeth Smith, who recently served as executive officer, 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Camp Pendleton.

During his remarks, Roberts spoke about the history of EMFs which were originally called Fleet Hospitals during World War II and highlighted their support to both combat and humanitarian missions over the following decades.
Additionally, Roberts spoke of the changing environment and the need for flexibility and adaptability. “While listed as EMF 150, it is likely EMFs will need to be more agile, perhaps more modular in the future,” he said. “That takes considerable planning and training … supporting the warfighter to fight and win wars.”

After accepting command of EMF 150 – Alpha, Smith spoke to the Sailors of her command.
“I am honored to serve with you today in meeting this challenge and I’m humbled to a part of your team, said Smith. “The demand placed upon us, when called, will be high, but we will be ready and we will strive to continue to meet the mission of this command, of Navy Medical Readiness Training Command Camp Pendleton, of Navy Medical Forces Pacific, and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery,” she added.

The mission of the EMF is “to provide standardized, modular, flexible theater hospitalization and health service support functionality to an advanced base environment throughout the full range of military operations,” according to the Navy EMF directive.

NMRTC Camp Pendleton's mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research.
