Navy Entomologists are mission-critical, Force Health Protection specialists assigned to operational and medical research commands worldwide including Forward Deployable Preventative Medicine Units (FDPMU), Naval Medical Research commands, Navy Environmental and Preventative Medicine Units, and US Marine Corps Medical Battalions. The Navy currently has 40 active duty and 6 reserve entomologists.

Navy Entomologists support Force Health Protection and Readiness by:
  • Preventing and reducing disease and non-battle injuries caused by arthropods
  • Assisting in the development and evaluation of arthropod control technologies and techniques
  • Assessing and reducing disease risk using innovative surveillance and control techniques
  • Coordinating, developing, and implementing comprehensive disease and pest control programs
  • Training civilian and military personnel in comprehensive pest and vector management strategies and tools
  • Providing professional consultation and advice for contingency, disaster relief, humanitarian, and capacity building operations
  • Researching vector-borne diseases, including the physiology, bionomics, and taxonomy of medically important arthropods
Lt. Brian Heintschel, assigned to the entomology division of Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine 6 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, studies a sample of insects collected from ships and shore facilities. Medical entomology is the study of insects, spiders, ticks and mites, collectively referred to as arthropods, and the diseases they transmit. NEPMU-6 supports operational forces and shore installations by providing services such as pest control training and uniform treatment with insect repellent.
