Captain David G. Lang, MSC, USN

Biography

A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Captain Lang earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from The University of Utah College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and a Master of Public Health and Health Services Administration from The University of Utah School of Medicine.
 
Captain Lang was commissioned a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Medical Service Corps in August of 2000 and attended Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island.  His first duty assignment was U.S. Naval Hospital, Keflavik, Iceland where he served as Administration and Manpower Officer.  In 2003, he reported in USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6) and deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  In 2005, he assumed duties as Patient Administration Officer and Assistant Director For Administration at U.S. Naval Hospital, Guam.
 
Following his second overseas assignment, Captain Lang was selected for a Medical Plans and Operations Fellowship on the staff of Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he served as lead medical planner for Pacific Partnership 2010.  Captain Lang then reported to NORAD/U.S. Northern Command as Deputy Chief, Medical Plans and Operations, and Medical Operations Center Director during multiple natural disaster relief operations and exercises.
 
In 2012 Captain Lang reported as Director For Administration and Healthcare Business Operations to Naval Health Clinic Hawaii serving 85,000 beneficiaries at eight clinics on two islands.  During this tour Captain Lang deployed in support of Pacific Partnership 2013 where he served as advance team medical planner in Apia, Samoa, and Majuro, Republic of The Marshall Islands.  Additionally, he participated in Pacific Angel 2014 where he conducted a Theater Security Cooperation mission to assist the Nepal Army as they built a healthcare executive infrastructure within their medical system.
 
In 2015 Captain Lang reported as Director For Administration to The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center.  In this position he provided executive leadership at a Headquarters with nine subordinate commands, four detachments, and 900 staff located from Hawaii to Spain.  The Navy Public Health Enterprise provides specialized support and services to fleet and shore units in areas of occupational medicine, environmental health, industrial hygiene, toxicology, preventive medicine, health promotion, disease surveillance, vector control, DoD drug screening programs, HIV & Hepatitis testing and policy, and radiological health hazards.
 
In 2017 Captain Lang reported as Director For Administration to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton.  In this billet he led 800 staff and provided executive leadership to the command suite and all non-clinical patient care activities for a 43 bed family practice teaching hospital with 18 geographically disbursed clinics across two states serving 180,000 Sailors, Marines, and families of the First Marine Expeditionary Force and west coast Naval Construction Battalions.
 
In 2020 Captain Lang reported as Defense Health Agency (DHA) Liaison to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.  He led coordination of all tri-service fixed-facility healthcare integration efforts to support peacetime initiatives, warfighter readiness, and DHA transition throughout 70 million square miles of the Indo-Pacific Area of Operations.  Additionally, Captain Lang served as Deputy Surgeon (Chief of Staff) for six months during hi op-tempo COVID-19 response; directing execution of all Indo-Pacific Joint Health Service Support initiatives and leading daily battle rhythm and staff operations within the Surgeon’s office.
 
In 2022 Captain Lang reported as Director For Administration to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center | The President’s Hospital.  He led 950 staff supporting all patient care initiatives at the largest joint academic medical center within The Department of Defense to include 250 beds, 66 GME programs, and 700 trainees.  Additionally, he was responsible for 3.7M square feet of space, $180M budget, and $230M additional logistical support to clinical operations.  While at Walter Reed he also served as Interim Chief of Staff for 2 months during a period of high staff turnover and increased clinical operations.
 
In 2025 CAPT Lang reported as Executive Officer to Navy Medicine Readiness & Training Command (NMRTC) Bethesda.  NMRTC Bethesda is the Navy element supporting Walter Reed clinical operations.  In this role he leads 1100 staff, 300 GME students, and ensures readiness and training requirements are met and exceeded for nine deployable units.
 
Captain Lang is a qualified Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer.  His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various other service and unit awards.
 
Captain Lang and his wife Chantelle have two children.
