History
Rota is located on the southern coast of Spain, north of the Bay of Cadiz. It is known as the "Gateway to the Mediterranean," and is strategically located near the Strait of Gibraltar and halfway between the United States and Southwest Asia.

In 1953, the United States signed economic aid and mutual defense agreements with Spain leading to the establishment of a joint Spanish-American Base (La Base Naval de Rota) that would support Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleets, as well as Air Force bases in Spain.

Navy medical activities began in 1958 with the establishment of the Naval Station Dispensary under the leadership of CAPT Edward Irons, MC, USN.  On July 1, 1968, the dispensary was expanded and designated a Naval Hospital. The current Naval Hospital was dedicated on August 29, 1989.

Today, Naval Station Rota plays a crucial role in supporting our nation’s objectives and defense, providing unmatched logistical support and strategic presence to all of our military services and allies. Rota supports Naval Forces Europe-Africa, Naval Forces Central Command, 6th Fleet and Combatant Command strategic priorities by providing airfield and port facilities, security, force protection, logistical support, administrative support and emergency services to all U.S. and NATO forces. Naval Hospital/Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Rota plays a vital role in providing compassionate care to these elements of the Naval Forces and their families at what is the largest Navy installation in Europe.
