History

NMRTC Sigonella sits on Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella in the Mediterranean island of Sicily, Italy. NAS (originally Naval Air Facility until the 1980s) Sigonella was established in 1959 to expand work being completed at the British Royal Navy Air Station in Malta. The American military base has steadily grown as a prominent and strategically important Naval Air Station since. As the community grew, the need for a larger, more comprehensive treatment facility became apparent. Active-duty members, their dependents, and other Tricare beneficiaries welcomed Naval Hospital Sigonella and the Flight Line Clinic in 1993, significantly decreasing the number of medical evacuations off island.
