"Medical Readiness Starts Here!"
Navy Medicine education and training has a long and proud history of developing, training and producing Basic Hospital Corpsman and highly specialized medical technicians. This history goes back to Aug. 11, 1902, when the first students graduated from Naval Hospital Portsmouth. Since that time, Navy Medicine education and training has undergone many transitions and transformations, up to and including those in the overhaul of military medicine legislated in the National Defense Authorization Acts 2017–2019. Today, NMFSC is the headquarters staff specifically designated within the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) as a direct subordinate to the Surgeon General of the Navy to own and manage all medical training, education and instruction for the production of competent medical personnel. Navy Medicine Sailors continue to receive exceptional training to meet the operational requirements of the Force, even as maintaining technical specialties requires continuous modification to adapt to emerging technologies, improved health care delivery methods and new requirements.
