CAPT Protegenie Reed, NC

Executive Officer

Capt. Protegenie "Genie" Reed was born in Miami, Florida, and spent much of her early childhood in Port-au-Paix, Haiti. In 1998, she earned a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from Florida International University and began her career as a staff nurse on Labor and Delivery at Parkway Regional Medical Center in Miami. The following year, she commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and completed Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island.

Her first assignment was at National Naval Medical Center Bethesda, Maryland, where she served as a staff nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU). Subsequent tours took her to U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, Italy, and Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, California, where she held the role of Division Officer for the OBGYN department. In 2007, she deployed as an Individual Augmentee, supporting Expeditionary Medical Facility Kuwait, where she provided vital healthcare services to military personnel in a challenging operational environment.

In 2010, she was competitively selected for Duty Under Instruction (DUINS) and earned her master’s degree in Nurse Midwifery from the University of Washington. Upon graduation, her utilization tour brought her to U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan, where she served as the Department Head for OBGYN. During this time, she participated in the 2011 Pacific Partnership mission aboard the USS Cleveland (LPD 7), providing women’s healthcare in support of USPACOM Theater Security Cooperation and Humanitarian Civic Assistance missions across Southeast Asia.

In 2014, she reported to U.S. Naval Hospital Guam, where she was the sole Military Certified Nurse Midwife on the island.  In 2015, she again deployed with Pacific Partnership aboard USNS MERCY (T-AH 19), this time serving as Department Head for the Inpatient Adult and Pediatric Units. There, she led a team of 62 personnel, delivering care to over 800 patients from host nations during a humanitarian mission that spanned multiple countries.

Her leadership abilities were further recognized in 2016 when she was selected as the Specialty Leader for the Navy’s Certified Nurse Midwife community. She served in this influential role until 2019, overseeing the professional development and advancement of midwives throughout the Navy. In 2017, she was assigned to U.S. Naval Hospital Jacksonville as the Department Head of the OBGYN clinic, where she led a team of 31 in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to military families.

In 2020, Capt. Reed returned to U.S. Naval Medical Readiness Training Command Yokosuka, Japan, where she served as Director for Surgical Services and subsequently in 2023 as the Chief Nursing Officer/Director for Nursing Services.  During her time in Japan she earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, further advancing her clinical and leadership expertise. She is currently serving as the Executive Officer, Naval Medical Leader and Professional Development Command, Bethesda, Maryland.  

Capt. Reed is board certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board and holds the Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer designation. Her personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Silver Star, and the Navy Achievement Medal.
