A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Captain Jonathan M. Stahl began his Naval service when he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States (U.S.) Naval Reserves.  After graduating from Northwestern University Dental School with a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1994, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant and assigned to Branch Dental Clinic Naval Base San Diego, California.  A year later, he was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan as an Assistant Dental Officer.  Next, he served as an Assistant Dental Officer onboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) where he earned his Surface Warfare Officer Medical Department qualification.  From 1997 to 1999, Dr. Stahl was assigned to Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland.
 
In 2001, Dr. Stahl earned a certificate in Comprehensive Dentistry from the U.S. Army’s Fort Hood training site and was assigned as Branch Head of the Naval Coastal Systems Station, Panama City, Florida Dental Clinic.  In the summer of 2003, Dr. Stahl reported to Indiana University School of Dentistry where he earned graduate certificates in Operative and Preventive Dentistry as well as a Master of Science in Dentistry degree.  Additionally, he earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine.  Dr. Stahl is a diplomat of the American Board of General Dentistry.  He has also been awarded Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry.
 
In March of 2006, Dr. Stahl reported to Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California.  In addition to performing the duties as the Command Operative and Preventive Dentistry Specialist, he also served as the Fleet Division Officer and Fleet Dental Liaison Officer for the command.  From January to August of 2007, he was deployed to Expeditionary Medical Facility Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom.  While in Kuwait, he served as the Camp Arifjan Dental Clinic Head and Senior Dental Officer.  
 
Commencing in June 2008, Dr. Stahl was appointed as Navy Medicine’s Specialty Leader for Preventive Dentistry and remained in that position until 2012.  From September of 2008 until March of 2013, he was assigned to the University of California San Francisco where he completed a PhD in oral and craniofacial sciences.  Upon completion of his doctoral studies, Captain Stahl was assigned as a research scientist at U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio, Texas (NAMRU-SA) and served as the Director for Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine.  While assigned at NAMRU-SA he was appointed as Navy Medicine’s Specialty Leader for Dental Research. From July 2018 to July 2020, Captain Stahl served at the Executive Officer for U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit TWO (NAMRU-2).  In July 2020, Captain Stahl assumed duties as the Commanding Officer for NAMRU-2. 
 
Captain Stahl’s military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation (3 awards) Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Fleet Marine Force Ribbon and other various awards.
