Rabies presents a health threat to Navy and Marine Corps personnel both in the United States and overseas. Timely post-exposure prophylaxis for persons exposed to potentially infected animals is effective in preventing clinical human rabies.

BUMEDINST 6220.13B provides policy for the prevention of rabies among Department of the Navy (DON) personnel and other Military Health System beneficiaries. Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Units (NEPMUs) serve as an authoritative source of rabies prevention expertise within DON.
